September 16-20 2006 - Canyonlands and Stuff. I flew to Grand Junction CO, about two hours from Moab, and rented a car. The photo above is of the LaSal mountains, I took it while driving west on I-70. I hoped mainly to hike in Canyonlands NP, a park I've only visited once previously. I visited the Island district of Canyonlands. This is the view from Grand View Point, from about 180 degrees looking roughly south. It was a perfect day for a desert hike. November 10, 2007: Canyonering in Rubio Canyon / Verdugo Hills Night Hike. Rubio Canyon's famous waterfalls, and a club hike to the ridgeline of the Verdugos to look at LA. Unfortunately I have no group photos here, just these few. A stitch of me starting down 80' Thalehaha Falls. WA-HOO! Normally a lot more water pours off this falls, so it looks more like at this page. This was the highest of 7 rappels. Back to Kev's Page.
Cirque Peak

Cirque Peak is a 12900' peak overlooking the Cottonwood Lakes basin, in the Golden Trout Wilderness of the South Sierra. I pumped some water at Long Lake. The Foxtail Pines. Grow here, just below the treeline, and they live to very old ages. Climbing up the north slope of Cirque Peak. Cirque Peak: The movie! 27 Mb Go here. Malibu Creek SP

February 24, 2007. This month's Hiking Club outing is at Malibu Creek State Park. In the central Santa Monica mountains (map). It used to be the 20th Century Fox movie ranch, and is where the TV show MASH was shot until 1983. We hiked to the MASH site today. Oak-dotted valley of Malibu Creek. Most of the first Planet of the Apes was filmed here, also parts of Swiss Family Robinson, Dr Doolittle, and for Pleasantville they built a whole main street facade here.

June 14-18 in Northern Arizona. I drove out to Flagstaff for a few days to hike. I was lured to cut the drive in half by overnighting in a $27 room in Laughlin NV. Getting a bed each way was worthwhile, and I didn't spend any more money there. I drove in at midnight, but it was still like 94 degrees outside. I spent a day hiking in the West Rim area at Grand Canyon. Here I am on the trail down into the Hermit Basin. It was a real hot day, so mostly I stayed near the rim. Back to Kev's Page.

No matter, we had fun anyway. Ruins of Echo Mtn House. Our group by the old bullwheel that drove the cable incline railway. Photo in the drizzle. Saturday, July 11, 2015. On my local hike, I've seen lots of animals around sunset, and in July I sometimes see tarantulas, but this was new. Tonight right on the trail I found a tarantula hawk dragging away its prey. The tarantula hawk is a giant wasp that preys on tarantulas - sort of. It's one of the nastiest tales in nature. Boney Mountain is the highest peak in the range, and on clear days offers a view of the Channel Islands. Today I could count five of them. This paraglider was circling the peak. In winter when the air is dry and clear, the low afternoon sun sets up a shine off the water that highlights the ocean very well. I could identify the Channel Islands, including Santa Barbara Island 95 miles southwest, and 11,000' Telescope Peak in Death Valley NP and 12,000' Olancha Peak in the south Sierra, both about 130 miles north. Saturday, March 24, 2018. March 17 - Hiking Club in Solstice Canyon, Malibu. We were out for an 8-mile hike on the first sunny day after a week or so of intermittent storms. Solstice Canyon once was a ranch, but the area burned out in 1982, and the family sold or donated it to the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy. Monday, November 7, 2011. Harpers Ferry and the October 2011 Snowstorm. I did a hike up the north face of the mountains surrounding Harpers Ferry the day after the big October snowstorm. The combination of snow and trees with leaves was beautiful. The damage to the trees and the trail was extensive though - the snow stuck to the leafy trees and brought many of them down. Can you spot the trail? It runs off to the left half way up the picture. You can see video on these YouTube links ( #1.
