The Cause & Our Mission. 8211; The Anzano Family. Common characteristics of Angelman Syndrome:. Problems with motor skills and balance. Angelman Syndrome is caused by a loss of function of the Ube3a gene in the brain. This can happen a few different ways. Deletions: A majority of AS cases are caused by deletions on the maternal copy of chromosome 15. UBE3A Mutations: Mutations in the UBE3A gene either prevent its expression or function. Although the cause of AS is known, there are currently no treatments available for this disorder. FAST is committed to funding the research that will lead to treatments and eventually a cure.
