The Nutmeg Gardener: Winter Is Icumen In...
http://nutmeggardener.blogspot.com/2013/12/winter-is-icumen-in.html
A retired Connecticut Yankee chronicles her attempts at veggie gardening and frugal living. Wednesday, December 11, 2013. Winter Is Icumen In. If you've never read poet Ezra Pound's irreverent take on the medieval poem "Summer is icumen in" you should! It always cracks me up and summarizes nicely my own feelings about the season. Except for December and the days leading up to Christmas of course. I look forward to spring already. Here's a look at more snowiness by the house:. December 11, 2013 at 8:08 PM.
The Nutmeg Gardener: November 2013
http://nutmeggardener.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html
A retired Connecticut Yankee chronicles her attempts at veggie gardening and frugal living. Monday, November 18, 2013. I'm happy to be able to say I'm still getting some harvests from the 2013 garden, even if they are getting smaller and more spread apart! This week I pulled a few small carrots and two very little fall cabbages that were used in a nice stir fry. The first seed catalogue for the 2014 growing season arrived this week too, so let the garden dreaming begin! Tuesday, November 12, 2013. My pos...
The Nutmeg Gardener: Starting the New Year With Cold Weather But Warm Tummy
http://nutmeggardener.blogspot.com/2014/01/starting-new-year-with-cold-weather-but.html
A retired Connecticut Yankee chronicles her attempts at veggie gardening and frugal living. Saturday, January 4, 2014. Starting the New Year With Cold Weather But Warm Tummy. Like much of the country we are in the deep freeze here in CT! All it required were five pounds of sliced onions and one stick of butter in the crock-pot, cooked on low over 8 hours. OK, I'll admit, I cheated and did them on high over five, but they still turned out well. Bring it on, 2014! January 4, 2014 at 4:21 PM. I'm a retired ...

A retired Connecticut Yankee chronicles her attempts at veggie gardening and frugal living. Tuesday, November 12, 2013. Leek Greens, Or Waste Not Want Not. Where they eventually end up, but not before I've made a flavorful broth from them. Rachel @ Grow a Good Life. November 12, 2013 at 3:58 PM. What a great idea! I sometimes freeze leek and onion greens to use in making chicken stock, but I never thought to make a vegetable leek broth. November 12, 2013 at 5:15 PM. November 12, 2013 at 5:37 PM. Subscrib...

Harvest Monday: the Giant Come Home - 08/26/2013

Raquo; Harvest Monday: the Giant Comes Home – 08/26/2013. Harvest Monday: the Giant Comes Home – 08/26/2013. August 26, 2013 6 Comments. Not much to report on the garden this week. I had to water my plants for about the sixth time, this season. This glut of rain is quite perplexing and has been a bit of a pain, to the peppers. The big ‘news’ for the garden this week is that I finally got a giant aconcagua pepper! The one that I should have gotten, previously, conveniently rotted on the plant. 6 Responses...

Raquo; Harvest Monday: All the Colors of the Rainbow – 07/22/2013. Harvest Monday: All the Colors of the Rainbow – 07/22/2013. July 22, 2013 4 Comments. Somewhere, in an alternate dimension, the non-sick me is typing this while sipping a homebrewed beer instead of a cup of tea. When my family visited last, my mom drank my last bags of my comfort tea (Chinese White). I am a sad gardener. Harvest Monday: July 22, 2013. Regardless, I pulled in another batch of colorful peppers. A Rainbow of Assorted Peppers.
Harvest Monday: Putrefaction – 08/05/2013 | This Organic Process

Raquo; Harvest Monday: Putrefaction – 08/05/2013. Harvest Monday: Putrefaction – 08/05/2013. August 5, 2013 6 Comments. This was an interesting week for my peppers. And not interesting in a good way. To start things off, I started chopping up what I thought were very small Red Beauty bell peppers. I’d remarked on them in previous Harvest Mondays, thinking that two of my three Red Beauty plants had just put up a crop of tiny, crowded bell peppers. My wife chopped all my peppers, over the weekend, and we&#...
Harvest Monday - Morning Edition: 08/12/2013

Raquo; Harvest Monday – Morning Edition: 08/12/2013. Harvest Monday – Morning Edition: 08/12/2013. August 12, 2013 12 Comments. Another pepper-tastic week in the garden. No major casualties to report. Last week, the giant Aconcagua pepper plant had a fruit that completely decayed, on the plant, during ripening. Luckily, I have one pepper on there that appears to be holding its own, for the time being; it’s beginning to ripen. There are also two other peppers that are still growing. The Kratky Method Bost...
Harvest Monday: Pickle City - 08/19/2013

Raquo; Harvest Monday: Pickle City – 08/19/2013. Harvest Monday: Pickle City – 08/19/2013. August 19, 2013 12 Comments. Quite a small harvest this week after a few in a row of bountiful harvests. Not complaining, though, certainly. The Fish Peppers produced another wonderful harvest of red peppers. I am going to make some hot sauce this weekend and give it to people as Christmas presents, I’ve decided. I’ve already found hot sauce jars. 3 Jars of Refrigerator Pickles from Kratky Hydroponics. After the su...

A retired Connecticut Yankee chronicles her attempts at veggie gardening and frugal living. Saturday, February 22, 2014. Anyway, the news around here is seed starting and dreaming, oh dreaming about spring! We are in the midst of the worst winter we've had in years. Very depressing. But seeing the baby alliums popping up is cheering and today the skies are blue and the temps are mild. Later this week it's back to single digits. I'm feeling very blessed. Saturday, January 4, 2014. Bring it on, 2014! If yo...

A Dash of Nutmeg
A Dash of Nutmeg. To those who know me, it is no small secret that I struggle with depression and seasonal affective disorder. Over the years I have had my highs and lows. Right now I am in an in-between place that is frustrating. There are many factors that play into my current state of mind. Season: Since I … Continue reading →.
