Helo flights canceled and we’re grounded in McMurdo | The World of Nematodes

The World of Nematodes. Diana Wall's Soil Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning Lab. Helo flights canceled and we’re grounded in McMurdo. January 11, 2015 in Field Season. Working in the dry valleys requires that we travel from station to our field sites by helicopter. There aren’t any roads, there’s a giant field of sea ice between the dry valleys and McMurdo Station, and time is extremely valuable. So, (to my everlasting delight) we travel by helicopter. Valley of the Dead?: November 2008
http://icedoverinsummer.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html
Valley of the Dead? Saturday, November 15, 2008. Life in the "Valley of the Dead? After a scenic helicopter flight across McMurdo Sound, and up the Taylor Valley, our crew landed at Lake Fryxell to set up camp. The lake is covered in about 12 feet of ice (which we drilled through 4 separate times) and is surrounded by mountain peaks, scouring glaciers, and an impressive desert landscape. Once out on the lake, the ice varies in topography: along the shoreline, it is completely smooth and transparent, but,...

Adventures of an environmental geochemist. Thursday, January 08, 2009. Hobbies other than science? The snow blazes down and fizzles out on our Ohio pavement and fieldwork feels distant. During this season, my poor schnauzer is skittish on the ice and our walks grow shorter. As gray blankets us, I miss the aesthetic aspects of being in the field. And when not working, I find myself reading dark literature until I get into a funk and become one with my couch. Tuesday, January 06, 2009.

Friday, November 30, 2012. A new field season! I gearing up for my third field season working in the McMurdo Dry Valleys in the Transantarctic Mountains. This year, our crew will be Eric Sokol (myself), Kevin Geyer, and Jeb Barrett. During a normal work day back in the United States you will find us somewhere in Derring Hall, which houses the Department of Biological Sciences at Virginia Tech. During the field season you will find us at McMurdo Station. In other news, some scientists from the MCM LTER ha...
