Thanks to all those who shared in the fun and gave me encouragement. Compared to last April, it's been a good month for road biking with less snow and warmer temperatures. This week has seen perfect riding weather. For the last few days Mike has been riding his Ritchey. The flashy red and white paint job duplicates t...

Midwest Chronicles - Alaska to Wisconsin: 30 DOB - Day 27, A trail discovered and a Hill

http://alaskatowisconsin.blogspot.com/2015/04/30-dob-day-27-trail-discovered-and-hill.html

Monday, April 27, 2015. 30 DOB - Day 27, A trail discovered and a Hill. And then the dirt road narrowed to a double track trail used by ATVs. In terrain view on Google maps, it appears that the road on the right continues and then makes a 90-degree turn to the left, but if one looks closer there really isn't a bona fide road on the map past a certain point. Once back on pavement I decided to ride to one of the highest points in the Hayward area, Radio Hill, so called because there is a radio station, WRLS.

Midwest Chronicles - Alaska to Wisconsin: 30 Days of Biking - Days 11 & 12

http://alaskatowisconsin.blogspot.com/2015/04/30-days-of-biking-days-11-12.html

Sunday, April 12, 2015. 30 Days of Biking - Days 11 and 12. I went on a couple of rides on Saturday, the first one being in the morning to The Park Center. To get some things ready for the Couderay Waters. Wild and Scenic Film Festival matinee. It was a beautiful morning for a ride. After the matinee, Mike and I rode with Iras back to her house, and then turned around to head back home for the evening show of the Film Festival at The Park. Sunday began with watching a live feed of the Paris-Roubaix.

Midwest Chronicles - Alaska to Wisconsin: 30 DOB - Day 29, Girl's Night Out

http://alaskatowisconsin.blogspot.com/2015/04/30-dob-day-29-girls-night-out.html

Wednesday, April 29, 2015. 30 DOB - Day 29, Girl's Night Out. Every month throughout the year, for at least the past four to five years and maybe longer, on a Wednesday evening in the Cable-Hayward area, there is an event called "Girl's Night Out" (GNO). Organized and promoted by a local woman in the community who has a lot of connections, the event attracts varying numbers of women, anywhere from 10 to 100, depending on the venue and time of year. We enjoyed delicious hors d'oeuvres provided by Pine Bro...

http://alaskatowisconsin.blogspot.com/2015/04/30-days-of-biking-day-15-week-3.html

Wednesday, April 15, 2015. 30 Days of Biking - Day 15, Week 3. Every Wednesday, throughout the year, a group of outdoor enthusiasts from the Cable/Seeley/Hayward area, most of them retired, meets to either bike, hike or ski together, the activity depending on the season. During the summer and into early fall, it's either a road or mountain bike ride. And during the warmer months, there is a riding group that meets almost every day of the week in the Northwoods, whether it be the New Moon. 30 DOB - Day 26.

biciak: Glenn Eames' Old Spokes Home in Burlington, Vermont

http://biciak.blogspot.com/2014/06/glenn-eames-old-spokes-home-in.html

Friday, June 13, 2014. Glenn Eames' Old Spokes Home in Burlington, Vermont. After 14 years, he opened his own shop and named it the "Old Spokes Home.". He sold used bikes at first and fit right in supplying the fixie crowd until the interest peaked. He grew and sold new bikes, too. And Glenn can prove it. The pre-1900s bikes are organized to illustrate the evolution of bicycle design and innovation in the bicycle's first 40 years. Direct-drive, chain-drive, shaft-drive, wooden spokes, steel-spoked and ad...

biciak: Cycling in a Group

http://biciak.blogspot.com/2012/12/cycling-in-group.html

Friday, December 28, 2012. Cycling in a Group. Cycling with other folks is often a rewarding experience. Learning the skills of riding in a pack can result in thrillingly fast rides, racing tactics, breakaways and. a long ride home by yourself. Lake Pepin three-speed ride brew-up. Riding with a group of people who love the same things as you is fun. Riding together and sharing the experience of the ride, and then having a meal or a pie- stop together can be a great social event. So, choose wisely...2014 ...

http://biciak.blogspot.com/2014/08/pugsley-to-9zero7-upgrade-part-2-vee.html

Friday, August 22, 2014. Pugsley to 9Zero7 upgrade part 2: Vee Rubber Snowshoe XL 4.8 arrives! The build is almost complete. The Vee Rubber Snowshoe XL 4.8 arrived yesterday and it is a very different beast than it's predecessor the Snowshoe 4.7. Unlike the Snowshoe 4.7, which was more like a real 4.0, the Snowshoe XL 4.8 is every bit a wide high volume tire. The tread is much more aggressive. Snowshoe XL 4.8 on left and Snowshoe 4.7 on right. Time to hit the trail! August 23, 2014 at 3:09 PM. 2012 Cirqu...

biciak: Minnesota Randonneurs: Long-Distance Unsupported Riding - the Apple Valley 200K Brevet

http://biciak.blogspot.com/2014/06/minnesota-randonneurs-long-distance.html

Tuesday, June 3, 2014. Minnesota Randonneurs: Long-Distance Unsupported Riding - the Apple Valley 200K Brevet. Unlike racers who fixate over every ounce on the bike randonneurs tend to be more concerned about fit than weight. They spend time refining the fit of their bike so that every little irritating pain is eliminated because what is a minor annoyance at 30 miles can be a ride killer at 200 miles. Bike club in France. Rob Welsh gives the pre-ride info/safety speech. With his Rivendell Homer Hilson.

biciak: Emiliano Freschi

http://biciak.blogspot.com/2014/03/emiliano-freschi.html

Sunday, March 23, 2014. In November of 1981 I had just arrived in Milano, Italy as a tourist. But I was not going to the typical tourist attractions. I was interested in bicycle culture and history. My first stop was Detto Pietro Olmo, a great bike shop near the main train station. My second destination was the shop of Faliero Masi, located in the Vigorelli Velodrome. On my list were visits to Campagnolo and Cinelli. I returned to Plaza Gramsci to the shop of Emiliano Freschi and bought my red Freschi.

biciak: Christmas in Milano by Barbara Kelly

http://biciak.blogspot.com/2008/03/christmas-in-milano-by-barbara-kelly.html

Sunday, March 16, 2008. Christmas in Milano by Barbara Kelly. We entered the obscure storefront tucked away in the side of the Vigorelli Velodrome. A few older men, probably veteran racers and faithful customers, were ranting away in Italian. Curious stares met our questioning glances. It was hard to believe this was Masi's. The planning for our trip began in September. All of us were, students at the University of Alaska and had decided to spend the break between semesters on a European bicycle trip.

biciak: A 1963 Peugeot 650B conversion

http://biciak.blogspot.com/2014/06/a-1963-peugeot-650b-conversion.html

Friday, June 6, 2014. A 1963 Peugeot 650B conversion. What does that mean? The 650B is a designation of wheel size. Bike tire/wheel measurements are about as messy as any measurement made these days. The same exact wheel/tire can be measured many different ways. To make things worse, some tires/wheels are only talked about in one measurement system or the other. Jan Heine, in his magazine Bicycle Quarterly,. The interesting thing is that older 700c sport touring bikes of the 1970s, that can't use wider t...

biciak: Johnny Coast

http://biciak.blogspot.com/2012/12/johnny-coast.html

Tuesday, December 11, 2012. Johnny has built a number of custom fixtures over the years to speed up some of the time consuming frame-building procedures, like adding braze-ons. Recently, he has been exploring Bi-Lam lugs or what he says Hank James calls "half-lugs," an old treatment that combines a lug and filet brazing in the same joint. He first used it in mixtie frames ordered by Chris Kulczycki for Velo-Orange, since there where no lugs made for the angles required in the mixte. He is working with Ch...
