Worthy of Note

Thursday, June 23, 2011. Orson Scott Card: The Call of Earth. Orson Scott Card is one of the premier authors working in modern science fiction, largely thanks to the classic Ender's Game. He is less well known for his advocacy for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints - that is, Mormonism. This advocacy is especially on display in the Homecoming Saga, which is a relatively direct re-imagining of the Book of Mormon in a futuristic science-fiction setting. Worthy of Note: I Confess (1953)

http://worthyofnotereviews.blogspot.com/2011/05/i-confess-1953.html

Friday, May 13, 2011. I Confess" is widely regarded as a mediocre entry in the Hitchcock canon. Certainly, in terms of the artistry and technical ingenuity, this film cannot compare to the greatest of Alfred Hitchcock's oeuvre. Even so, the film wrestles with issues of truth, morality, honor and the Catholic practice of faith in an almost unprecedented manner. "I Confess" may be my favorite out of all the films of Hitchcock. The same applies to Homer's "Odyssey" and the road movie, "Romeo and Juliet" and...

Worthy of Note: Eusebius: The Church History

http://worthyofnotereviews.blogspot.com/2011/06/eusebius-church-history.html

Tuesday, June 7, 2011. Eusebius: The Church History. Quite simply, Eusebius of Caesarea is the Father of Church History. With the obvious exception of Luke, who gave us the book of Acts, Eusebius was the first person to construct a history of the early Christian church. Though there are rough patches and legitimate criticisms to be made, Eusbeius' work is an almost unprecedented boon to modern historians. Is informed by explicitly theological content. The first book in The Church History. The fourth book...

Worthy of Note: Michael Flynn: Eifelheim

http://worthyofnotereviews.blogspot.com/2011/06/michael-flynn-eifelheim.html

Tuesday, June 21, 2011. Such is the case with Eifelheim. The novel's fidelity to the medieval mind and culture is truly astonishing, and its value cannot be overstated. The Middle Ages are quite possibly the least understood period in world history among the general public. Eifelheim. Is one of the best and purest treatments of medieval culture I have ever read, and it has my highest recommendation. To purchase, check out Amazon.com:. Michael Flynn also maintains a blog at The TOF Spot.

Worthy of Note: Orson Scott Card: Seventh Son

http://worthyofnotereviews.blogspot.com/2011/04/orson-scott-card-seventh-son.html

Thursday, April 14, 2011. Orson Scott Card: Seventh Son. At times, the novel does succumb to the laziest of historical fiction tropes, in its insistence of mentioning every remotely memorable figure from real American history. However, as an re-creation of an alternate colonial America, I still found it to be thoroughly impressive. On the whole, "Seventh Son" is a short read with a decidedly parochial focus, which points to the far greater saga that lies ahead. Seventh Son (Tales of Alvin Maker, Book 1).

Worthy of Note: "Metropolitan (1990)

http://worthyofnotereviews.blogspot.com/2010/10/metropolitan-1990.html

Monday, October 18, 2010. It's "Whit Stillman Week" at the Worthy of Note blog. This week, I'll be reviewing three films by one of my favorite directors, Whit Stillman. I hope you appreciate the reviews, and perhaps even the films.*. Metropolitan," Stillman's Oscar-nominated first film (1990, Best Original Screenplay), presents the rather insular world of New York youth in the midst of the debutante ball season. They are the self-identified urban haute bourgeoisie. Tom's parents had been divorced for sev...

A Sacramental World: May 2011

http://sacramentalworld.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html

Theological Reflections of an Evangelical Medievalist. Sunday, May 29, 2011. Commentary on Scripture: Romans 7. Or do you not know, brethren, (for I am speaking to those who know the Law), that the Law has jurisdiction over a person as long as he lives? Romans 7:1-3 The Law has jurisdiction over the living, though not necessarily over the second life (the resurrection). Romans 7:8 Sin takes advantage of the Law, and of our rebelliousness. Without standards, there can be no rebellion against standards.

Seeing Sepia: Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)

http://seeingsepia.blogspot.com/2011/10/bram-stokers-dracula-1992.html

Classic Film and Book Reviews. Film Specials and Series. Thursday, October 27, 2011. Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992). Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula. Is perhaps the most influential piece of literature in the horror genre, and has been so for over a century. Yet its film adaptations seem to feel absolutely no loyalty to the original source material, judging by the way they seem almost conscientiously to ignore Stoker's work. Resembles what Jane Austen actually wrote. Cassandra M. Vlahos.

Theological Reflections of an Evangelical Medievalist. Monday, August 1, 2011. Commentary on Scripture: Romans 16. I commend to you our sister Phoebe. that you receive her in the Lord in a manner worthy of the saints, and that you help her in whatever matter she may have need of you. Romans 16:3-4 Prisca and Aquila are referenced in Acts 18, worked with Paul as tent-makers, and apparently risked their own necks to save Paul's life. Theological Reflections of an Evangelical Medievalist. Sunday, January 16, 2011. Book Review: "The Rite". I read this book without knowing precisely what to expect. I was interested in learning about spiritual warfare, especially from a Catholic perspective. I knew that Father Thomas Euteneur (currently of the diocese of Palm Beach, formerly of Human Life International) had written a well-received book on the subject, Exorcism and the Church Militant. Baglio wrote The Rite. Posted by Alex Binz. Skilfully...

Romas 12:9-21 The verses that follow and conclude Romans 12 are a series of largely miscellaneous exhortations by Paul to the congregation at Rome regarding Christian behavior and belief. Worthy of Our Calling. Living out Ephesians 4:1-3. August 14, 2015. Oh how God has his perfect timing and plan. Remember how four months ago in April I was bursting at the seams with ideas and things I felt the Lord had placed on my heart. All to serve the women of Uganda. And I sat back and thought, well, this will take time. He will push me in the right direction. Am I supposed to start a non-profit? How will this work? I posted recently about Fair Trade Friday.
