The Charm of Birds | Volant B.C.

https://volantbc.wordpress.com/2013/01/13/the-charm-of-birds

Citrine Wagtail Alternate Location. Oh, Canada →. The Charm of Birds. January 13, 2013. Recently there has been a video. Making its way around the birding listserves. In it, a clip from the movie. But the first to my knowledge to add a birding slant. The video already has a whopping 2500 views, about as viral as a birding video clip ever gets. The second noteworthy thing is the author himself. It is clear that he found peace in birds, but why has he not had more time for birds in his life? This is where ...

The Charm of Birds. Seeing Redwing →. August 1, 2013. Branta canadensis, ironically from Audubon’s “Birds of America”. Photo: Wikimedia Commons. While these few animals have “Canada” as part of their common name, many more include it in their scientific name with the specific epithet of. This comes from the words Canada, and the latin suffix ensis , meaning of, or from, a place. Thus the scientific name for the Canada Goose, Branta canadensis. And the Yellow-green Grosbeak ( Caryothraustes canadensis.

Citrine Wagtail Alternate Location →. January 5, 2012. This entry was posted in birds. First of the year. Citrine Wagtail Alternate Location →. January 6, 2012 at 07:53. As an aside….are you allowed to count birds if you only hear them on a recording device that you put out? How about a recording device that you didn’t put out, but you’re the first one to listen to and interpret the recordings? January 6, 2012 at 09:34. How do you think it compares to having a qualified observer perform a point count?

Newer posts →. August 14, 2011. What’s the Teal-io. July 27, 2011. Every once in a while in birding, something completely surprises you. Sometimes it’s an assumption that you’ve always had, that you suddenly realize is completely false. Sometimes it’s an epiphany about some field mark – maybe one that every other birder knows, that has somehow slipped past you for all this time. The surprisingly large Limpkin. Soother free since September three | T is for Two

https://tristanspage.wordpress.com/2013/09/06/soother-free

T is for Two. The ongoing adventures of parenting the cutest kids in all the land. Friday Fives: How Cora is different from Tristan. Goodbye guest room →. Soother free since September three. September 6, 2013. I’d been worried about the middle of the night, but it wasn’t too bad. A few times he woke up crying, and it took lots of laying down with him, songs and backrubs to get him back to sleep. But there was less freaking out than I’d feared. The Naturalest Naturalist: June 2014

http://naturalestnaturalist.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 11 June 2014. This fella got a Spizella. The idea of that species being exciting after coming back from a play where they're abundant is somewhat absurd, but this species was long overdue for me in Victoria. Maybe relieved is a better description of how I felt. To put this bogey bird in perspective, let me relate it to Brewer's Sparrow - the other rare Spizella. Singing from the top of a Scotch Broom shrub at Layritz Park on June 8, 2014. That was a weird way to do that. Anyways, don't tak...

The Naturalest Naturalist: May 2014

http://naturalestnaturalist.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html

Sunday, 18 May 2014. I managed to get quite close and snapped some photos that allowed identification: Merriam's Kangaroo Rat. The only other kangaroo rat I had seen before this was an Ord's Kangaroo Rat on a sagebrush plateau near Plush, Oregon. Oh right. Sidewinder! This angle shows off those raised supraocular scales of the Sidewinder. In a Palo Verde shrub. Also in Palo Verde. The shorter, straighter bill now looks very obvious to me on this Bendire's Thrasher. In behind the thrasher, I heard the cal...

The Naturalest Naturalist: April 2014

http://naturalestnaturalist.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 29 April 2014. In Hoyer I Trust. This is just a little teaser for what may be produced here in a series of more informative entries. Invariably I will get lost in field work and just never get around to writing up the details of the last two and a half weeks that I spent in Arizona, but we'll see. I knew he was my kind of people because I subscribed to his blog, Birdernaturalist. Long ago. What's not to love about this? This beauty is a Five-striped Sparrow. This Mexican Long-tongued Bat. We had...

The Naturalest Naturalist: Going Bananas With an Anna's

http://naturalestnaturalist.blogspot.com/2015/02/going-bananas-with-annas.html

Sunday, 1 February 2015. Going Bananas With an Anna's. The park holds a little forested pond that hosts Wood Ducks and Mallards that local residents come to feed. In a sense, it is like King's Pond and Bow Park. I was hoping this water might draw in something else interesting, but the best bird I came across was a Lincoln's Sparrow. Not exactly a big score, but always nice to see. 1 February 2015 at 14:30. You really had a magic moment with this hummer! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

The Naturalest Naturalist: January 2015

http://naturalestnaturalist.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Thursday, 15 January 2015. Two Palms and a Redpoll. First off, Happy New Year! I have been unmotivated by the prospect of doing blog posts without photos go along with them. I think the blog entry recession is over now that I've picked up a Canon 7D Mark II. Picking around the rocks. Ian and the Newells were equally elated. After watching them for a minute, I decided I would put my 7D Mark II to its first test. How would it perform in the dull, late day light? This shot of a Palm Warbler. Shot of the lot.

The Naturalest Naturalist: July 2014

http://naturalestnaturalist.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 8 July 2014. I Heard It Through the Kiwi Vine. A few weeks ago, if you'll recall, I managed to see my first Clay-coloured Sparrow in the Victoria checklist area. I even made brief mention of the next five species I anticipated to add as I work towards 300. Well, you can pretty much guarantee it won't work out the way you anticipate and I pretty instantly derailed my list. Monday, 7 July 2014. Just over a week ago, I finished up work in Valemount and had to drop a coworker off in the Vernon area&...
