UXBlog | IDV Solutions' User Experience: Tornado Tracks

http://uxblog.idvsolutions.com/2012/05/tornado-tracks.html

Data visualization at IDV Solutions. Wednesday, May 23, 2012. Got this data from NOAA via the spectacular Data.gov. It tracks 56 years of tornado paths along with a host of attribute information. Here, the tracks are categorized by their F-Scale (which isn't the latest and greatest means but good enough for a hack like me), where brighter strokes represent more violent storms. Check out the interactive version here. Check this tornado tracks map broken out by F-Scale here. Other Sort-Of Related Maps.

Data visualization at IDV Solutions. Friday, November 9, 2012. As more specific vote counts are coming in, a picture of voting distribution, volume, and party proportion can be formed. Here's a Goldsberry Map. Of what Election day 2012 looked like. More purple than not. Posterize. Here's a navigable version to peer in on the nitty gritty. Version might make the variation more discernible. In the case of the original image and @Politico. For print options regarding this map, visit here. Very good visualiz...

UXBlog | IDV Solutions' User Experience: Earthquakes since 1898

http://uxblog.idvsolutions.com/2012/06/earthquakes-since-1898.html

Data visualization at IDV Solutions. Monday, June 25, 2012. I've been looking at really general sources of existential risk. And visualizing them via the kitchen sink school of thematic mapping. So the earthquakes map was just a matter of time. Here, data from NCEDC.org. And the USGS and UC Berkeley have been sliced out into veneers based on magnitude, then glued onto and image that began it's life at NASA's Visual Earth. If historical epicenters were floaties, you could walk from Seattle to Wellington.

http://uxblog.idvsolutions.com/2013/03/color-theory-squeezed-through-google.html

Data visualization at IDV Solutions. Friday, March 22, 2013. Color Theory Squeezed through the Google-ifier. The other day I was reading Miranda Mulligan's article. On the subtle messages conveyed through map color choice, since we seem to associate certain attitudes with certain colors. Than color theory, but an interesting tool nonetheless. Then, as I was typing this VERY POST, Edward Tufte. 1) Google image search a term, screenshot the results (now called "quilting"). Each term generates quilt of ...

UXBlog | IDV Solutions' User Experience: Telling the Truth

Data visualization at IDV Solutions. Wednesday, October 12, 2011. Revised from a previous post. Higher-resolution images; same important topic.). The exact same data mapped using three common classification methods. What the deuce? What do each of these thematic maps have in common? They are all mapping the exact same data. What makes them so different? Map, but not necessarily) is how do I bucketize my data for color assignment? Breaks the data into equally filled groups. When choosing a method of class...

I'm Not Your Father's Accounting Professor. A Texan Chick Loose In New England. It’s A Summer Cooking Extravaganza! July 30, 2015. Monitoring minutia in the mind of Bradd Elden Libby. The Roads to Resilience. Jun 15, 2012 in Uncategorized. She was reading a book whose chapter was something like, you could die at any moment. And she got to thinking about how unfair it was to our kids that we didn't have anything in place in the event of our mutual tragic severe deaths. In summary, Stephen Tait is runner up for the executor of my will (is that ok, Steve? Sunday, February 27, 2011. The Kids are growing up!

Data visualization at IDV Solutions. Monday, August 10, 2015. Etsy is a bittersweet treasure trove of vintage maps. I have mixed feelings because, on one hand, sellers disassemble awesome old cartographic volumes, yanking the plates out of their bound context. On the other hand, they go on to live in tidy frames in Brooklyn apartments where human eyes can appreciate them for the first time in a hundred years (or ever). Anyway, here's one I found recently that has grown on me, and this is why. Data (which...
