Urban Wildlife Guide

Sunday, August 9, 2015. A walk in New Jersey. I took a nice long walk in New Jersey today. I was about an hour's drive from New York City in Hopewell. It looked like this. I saw this huge caterpillar, fat, and about 4 inches long. It's a Pandorus Sphinx moth caterpillar, Eumorpha pandorus. It's one of the caterpillars commonly called a hornworm, because in its younger stages it sports a horn on its rear end (which is on the left in this photo). Click to enlarge. And lots of Queen Anne's lace. A while ago...

Urban Wildlife Guide: August 2015

http://www.urbanwildlifeguide.net/2015_08_01_archive.html

Sunday, August 30, 2015. The moment one gives close attention to any thing, even a blade of grass, it becomes a mysterious, awesome, indescribably magnificent world in itself.". Click on the photos to enlarge. There is a well camouflaged praying mantis nymph inside that circle. They rely on camouflage to hunt, sitting unseen until their insect prey come within striking range - and then seizing them. It's pretty darned good camouflage. I wonder how many of these we. Pass without seeing them. A few feet aw...

Urban Wildlife Guide: February 2015

http://www.urbanwildlifeguide.net/2015_02_01_archive.html

Sunday, February 22, 2015. Last week I saw this pair of American wigeon ducks in the cold and partially frozen East River. The male is on the left. Click to enlarge. I spent the intervening time indoors nursing a cold and looking through old photos, and I found this shot of a pair in breeding plumage. The male, on the right, is sometimes called a "baldpate," which means baldheaded, because of the white stripe on its head. Something to look forward to! Sunday, February 15, 2015. Were standing on the ice.

Sunday, June 28, 2015. It's Linden Time Again. A branch of linden covered with fragrant flowers. Click to enlarge. Lindens are sometimes called bee trees because they are so attractive to bees (not just to me). The linden's honey is unique: it's woody and fresh and delicious. It is believed to help aid sleep and many people take it before bed. Combine that with a bath with dried linden blossoms and you are set for the night. Trees in the Garden. By D H. Lawrence. The City Birder: Great Backyard Bird Count

http://citybirder.blogspot.com/2009/02/great-backyard-bird-count.html

My Red-tailed Hawks and other wildlife observations from around Brooklyn and NYC. Check out City Birder Tours. Tuesday, February 17, 2009. Great Backyard Bird Count. In the past, I've described bird surveys, such as, the annual "Christmas Bird Count". Or the "Spring Birdathon". In recent years, another annual "Citizen Science" project has taken hold, thanks to the dedicated folks at the Audubon Society and Cornell Lab or Ornithology. This is the description of the project from their website:. Only loosel...

When I lived in Ohio I had the great honor of being introduced to Dr. George Uetz at the University of Cincinnati. All about insects, spiders, and other arthropods, focusing on North America north of Mexico. Friday, November 28, 2014. Be Thankful for "Bugs". A couple days ago the following post crossed my Facebook newsfeed, and it is an excellent reminder of why insects and other arthropods are so important to us as human beings, and to the planet Earth as well. Honeybee pollinating flower in Arizona. Dung beetle pair rolling dung ball in Kansas. A scientific article was published in 2006 in the journal Bioscience.

All about insects, spiders, and other arthropods, focusing on North America north of Mexico. Sunday, May 25, 2014. Last Monday, my wife and I went out to the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge northeast of Denver. We were pleased to find a handful of specimens of the cute little “Zebra Jumper,” Salticus scenicus. It is suspected that the Zebra Jumper is native to Eurasia, but has now spread across the temperate areas of the globe thanks to human commerce and travel. Look for these charismati...

About HORTravels and About Me. Exploring the horticultural beauty in every adventure. May 7, 2015. Flowers in Spring. Scott Arboretum. Everywhere I go people are sneezing. Spring seemed to happen all at once and the pollen from everything is coating cars, pavement and, apparently, nostrils in a dusky green film. All about insects, spiders, and other arthropods, focusing on North America north of Mexico. Friday, May 1, 2015. Yesterday I came across an interesting little fly while exploring Cheyenne Mountain State Park, just south of Colorado Springs, Colorado. What I found interesting is exactly where. I found them, but these are unusual dipterans in almost every regard. Vision must be quite keen, though, as the compound eyes take up most of the head. Why the name "dance fly," you ask? Colorado Springs is blessed with a number of concrete bike trails throughout the city, including parks like Garden of the Gods. At this time of year, one can find numerous insects, spiders, and other arthropods parading across these paths. One example I encountered the other day was a male of the Two-spotted Cobweb Weaver, Asagena americana. Another inter...

Photo Gallery and Credits. The secret lives of common animals. Field Guide to Urban Wildlife by. Though urban animals live among us, sometimes even inside our homes, they largely go unnoticed. They are too commonplace. Yet there are moments- watching a fox in the backyard, discovering a centipede in the bathtub, or finding a bat asleep in the garage- when we wonder about them.
