The Rideau Timescapes App is a free downloadable app for Apple iOS devices that allows the visitor to interact with the visual heritage of lockstations along the canal in a whole new way. More than 700 historic photographs are available through a map interface. Short histories of the canal and its lockstations are available at the tap of a button. And slide through time to see the changing landscape in our unique Timescape view.

How to Use the Rideau Timescapes App. Tap "Explore" to bring up a list of canal sites. The list is organized from north to south and shows the distance from your current location to other sites. Tap the name of the site you wish to explore. This will launch the map view. Individual images are marked with a red pin. Timescape images are marked with a green pin. More than 700 historical photographs organized around 28 different "sites" and available for viewing in an easy-to-use map interface. The app can detect your current position and jump to the site nearest to you. Images are zoomable to allow you to see the finer details. Overlay historical photographs with the contemporary scene in realtime through the phone camera, allowing you to position the historical image within the landscape and adjust the amount of transparency.

Timescapes was the first major qualitative longitudinal study to be funded in the UK, and explored how personal and family relationships develop and change over time. Director Bren Neale. Explains more about the Timescapes project in this short video. Timescapes ran for five years from February 2007, and was funded by the Economic and Social Research Council.
