Reflections on Life as a Middle School Principal (by Tim)
August 2014 – Let Learning Lead.
https://timdawkins.wordpress.com/2014/08
Reflections on Life as a Middle School Principal. Early Mornings and Dominoes. August 8, 2014. August 8, 2014. Yesterday afternoon I was invited by my good friend and respected middle level leader Lisa Meade ( @lisameade23. To participate in a chat at 5:30 AM today. This chat is called Breakfast Club, although I think Bleary-Eyed Coffee Club might be a more appropriate moniker, and it is the brain child of New Jersey middle school teacher Scott Capro ( @ScottCapro. Scott Capro (@ScottCapro) August 8, 2014.
January 2015 – Let Learning Lead.

Reflections on Life as a Middle School Principal. January 19, 2015. January 19, 2015. About halfway through the activity, during which all of the kids were hard at work and focused, I heard a student call my name from across the room. When I looked up, I saw that it was a young man named Griffin. The dialogue went something like this:. Hey Mr. Dawkins! Griffin (pointing to a blinking apparatus on the ceiling):. What are those things for? Why don’t you get back to that. Do you see what I did there?
December 2014 – Let Learning Lead.

Reflections on Life as a Middle School Principal. December 17, 2014. December 17, 2014. Although moving through this time of year in schools can be filled with hidden triggers that lead to unforeseeable emotional reactions from both kids AND adults, we must work hard to find a balance. We need to be, more than ever, the most reliable people at a time when even consistent parents’ patience is tested. Here are some things to consider as we ramp up to the holidays:. See you all in 2015! Simon T. Bailey.

I sent this message out to my staff today in my final “Friday” Focus of the year (does it still count if it’s on a Wednesday? And I thought I would share it here as I dive back into the world of refection through blogging. 1) What I’ve learned. 2) What I Want to Do Better. In a word: Everything! 3) What I’m Looking Forward To. Stay tuned for a principal on the move! Posted in Building Relationships.
September 2014 – Let Learning Lead.

Reflections on Life as a Middle School Principal. 8220;But aren’t you the principal? September 8, 2014. September 8, 2014. As I smile outwardly, inside I’m trying to come up with an answer to what is seemingly a very simple question. Except I’m brand new, and I have absolutely no idea. I decide to be honest and tell this mother that, in fact, we’re going to have to find someone together that can answer her question. She is stunned. But aren’t you the principal? You can, you just don’t want to try! Turn t...

Mr. Gillespie's Office: Eight Non-Negotiable Expectations for All Educators
http://reedgillespie.blogspot.com/2013/12/eight-non-negotiable-expectations-for.html
Musings of a lifelong educator and learner. Tuesday, December 10, 2013. Eight Non-Negotiable Expectations for All Educators. During Sunday's (December 8) #iaedchat on What Matters Most in Successful Schools. Moderator Jimmy Casas asked, "Should schools establish certain "non-negotiables" in terms of expectations for all staff? If so, what examples". Like all great twitter conversations, this one inspired reflection and projection, "What are my non-negotiables? 1 Believe in every student. Reading a great ...
Mr. Gillespie's Office: A Late Work Policy That Supports Learning
http://reedgillespie.blogspot.com/2013/05/a-late-work-policy-that-supports.html
Musings of a lifelong educator and learner. Sunday, May 12, 2013. A Late Work Policy That Supports Learning. In my first fifteen years of teaching, I struggled to develop an effective, fair and student-learning centered late work policy. My policies changed from year to year. One year, I’d accept no late work. The next, I’d accept any and all late work with no consequences. I faced four conflicts as I tried to create a policy that maximized student learning while instilling responsibility. The deadline d...
Mr. Gillespie's Office: Adminstrators Role in Encouraging Teacher Risk-Taking
http://reedgillespie.blogspot.com/2013/03/adminstrators-role-in-encouraging.html
Musings of a lifelong educator and learner. Sunday, March 10, 2013. Adminstrators Role in Encouraging Teacher Risk-Taking. In previous posts I discussed the need for risk-taking. And how teachers can inspire risk-taking in students. Today, I’m going to focus on how administrators can encourage risk-taking in the their teachers. To encourage teachers to step out of their comfort zones, school leaders must be trusted. How can administrators create a risk-taking and trusting environment? Instead, I focused ...
Mr. Gillespie's Office: Helping a Student (Me) Break Out of My Shell
http://reedgillespie.blogspot.com/2014/03/helping-student-me-break-out-of-my-shell.html
Musings of a lifelong educator and learner. Saturday, March 1, 2014. Helping a Student (Me) Break Out of My Shell. It’s safer to be quiet. One teacher saw me as intelligent but failed to see who I was. In class he called on me whenever another student answered a question incorrectly. “Reed, can you help explain to John why his answer is wrong? It was simply safer to be quiet. How’d they do it? In health class, a class that relied heavily on class discussion, my teacher always allowed us to pass on answer...
Mr. Gillespie's Office: Positive Referrals
http://reedgillespie.blogspot.com/2012/12/positive-referrals.html
Musings of a lifelong educator and learner. Sunday, December 16, 2012. Two years ago, when I first became an assistant principal, I instituted positive referrals, an idea that I unabashedly admit to stealing from Todd Whitaker and others. The premise behind the referrals is simple, I asked teachers to recommend any student who demonstrated Courage, Character, or Citizenship, which are the three principles on our school’s shield. 8220;Mom. I got a referral.”. 8220;What for this time? What did you do?
Mr. Gillespie's Office: 12 Steps to Creating a Successful Redo and Retake Policy
http://reedgillespie.blogspot.com/2013/04/12-steps-to-creating-successful-redo.html
Musings of a lifelong educator and learner. Wednesday, April 3, 2013. 12 Steps to Creating a Successful Redo and Retake Policy. The following is a follow-up to my post on redos and retakes. Implementing redos and retakes takes extra time and effort, but the following guidelines minimize teacher effort and maximizes student learning. When students fail a quiz, test or project, require them to complete a Retake Ticket or Reflection like this one. If students are retaking a quiz/test, don’t use the sa...
Mr. Gillespie's Office: Digital Tools for Digital Leaders
http://reedgillespie.blogspot.com/2015/03/digital-tools-for-digital-leaders.html
Musings of a lifelong educator and learner. Sunday, March 8, 2015. Digital Tools for Digital Leaders. Digital learning Day is March 13, so I wanted to use this opportunity to share several digital tools that I use a school leader and a one that I hope to make more use of. School leaders must be willing to integrate digital tools to meet the needs of today's teachers and students. When asked about my favorite tech tools, I tend to overlook Google Drive; perhaps because it's so ubiquitous, I don't even rea...

Let Learning Lead. | Reflections on Life as a Middle School Principal
Reflections on Life as a Middle School Principal. July 3, 2015 1 Comment. I checked my step counter, and I walked an average of 12,000 steps every day, and I only got lost in the enormity of the Penn Convention Center once. Needless to say, my calves would like a vacation. This was my second ISTE experience in as many years, and to be quite honest I wasn’t sure how this year could top last year in Atlanta. Amazingly, it did. How? These are my people! And his teachers as they talked about 10 years of educ...
