Monitoring Mars with TES. TES was used throughout the entire Mars Global Surveyor mission to monitor the dynamic atmosphere and map surface temperatures and features of Mars. Some of our favorite observation sets are presented here. It took the MGS spacecraft 137 passes to slowly reduce the orbit from 48 hours down to only 4 hours; this highly elliptical orbit gave TES a unique opportunity to image the entire martian hemisphere. ASU Thermal Emission Spectral Library. The TES instrument team maintains a Thermal Infrared Spectral Laboratory and Mineral Library at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. The library includes observations of terrestrial rock and mineral samples for comparison with the spectra of Mars returned by TES and also for interpreting remote sensing data collected with Earth as the target. The links below lead to detailed information about the ASU facility and the contents of the Spectral Library.

Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) launched from Cape Canaveral Air Station on 7 November 1996 and was successfully put into orbit around Mars on 12 September 1997. On 31 January 2001, MGS completed the mapping phase of the mission, which lasted one martian year (two Earth years). On 2 November 2006, mission controllers lost contact with the spacecraft, ending the mission. Infrared spectra, and the TES bolometer was in continual full-time use throughout the entire mission. A Blackbody: the Perfect Emitter. Anything that emits energy with a Planck distribution can be called a blackbody. A blackbody emitter is useful for comparison with materials that do not emit perfectly at all wavelengths, which is the case for most of the matter in the universe. A Universe of Selective Emitters.
