Theme and Inference in Dr. Seuss - Teaching in Room 6

http://www.teachinginroom6.com/2014/02/theme-and-inference-in-dr-seuss.html

Science and Social Studies. Theme and Inference in Dr. Seuss. Next week, as we know, is Dr. Seuss' birthday. Like many of you, my school is doing a whole week of "Read Across America" celebration and I wanted to participate in the celebration, but everything I was finding that dealt with Dr. Seuss was just too primary. While my kids enjoy cutting and coloring, I wanted them to do a bit more. On day one, I read The Cat in the Hat (Beginner Books(R). You can get a copy of the discussion questions here.

Science and Social Studies. The Beginning of my Digital Year! If you have been following along with Teaching in Room 6 lately, you know that I am mildly obsessed with using Google Apps in my classroom. I love finding different ways to incorporate the GAFE (Google Apps for Education) into my lessons in a practical and authentic way. (You can see some of what I have done so far here. I have access to at least 9 Chromebooks all year long (thanks to DonorsChoose.org. Then, after each month, I will have them ...

Building a Positive Class with Character Trait Word Clouds - Teaching in Room 6

http://www.teachinginroom6.com/2016/11/building-positive-class-with-character.html

Science and Social Studies. Building a Positive Class with Character Trait Word Clouds. This year, I am trying to do things that will keep our classroom positive and happy, so I thought I would connect some of the academic ideas we are learning with a bit of team building fun. So as we wrapped up our unit on character traits (you can read about exactly what we did here. I had the students think about the traits that their classmates embodied. So, this is totally made up, but you get the idea ;). I printe...

Will Grade for Coffee: (Successful) DIY Day

http://willgradeforcoffee.blogspot.com/2012/06/successful-diy-day.html

AMAZING 6th Grade Blogs. Tuesday, June 5, 2012. As I mentioned in my last post, I'm on a bit of a DIY kick right now. And yesterday was anything but successful. Remember this? Umm, yeah. I rest my case. But more on that in a minute. Did I mention Charlie gets REALLY excited about car rides? And then, he saw Matt and was EVEN MORE excited. But then we left. Charlie was NOT cool with that. And didn't stop crying all the way to the vet. Did I mention that we got stopped by not 1, not 2, but 3 trains. After ...

How could I possibly let this happen? Did they go home hating me? So, after thinking about this. and thi...

The Many Adventures of C & K: Fall, Halloween and Red Ribbon Week

http://colleenandkendraz.blogspot.com/2013/11/fall-halloween-and-red-ribbon-week.html

The Many Adventures of C and K. A place to share tidbits of our blessed life! Sunday, November 10, 2013. Fall, Halloween and Red Ribbon Week. We did try out a local pumpkin patch after some friends said it was "awesome". When we drove up to find a flat field with pumpkins strewn about, I wasn't impressed. Add to the fact that it was 99 degrees and we had a bummer of a "fall" experience. But we did get pumpkins! The dog throws her off- she looks like Dorothy, but she's actually Wendy Darling from Peter Pan.

There are some big changes happening here soon. No. I'm not switching to WordPress. Perhaps I should, but Blogger is more my speed, at least for now. So, before August, you will see a new look- with, of course, lots of purple! You also need some name tags that allow for "inserts." Instead of name tags, you will insert colored paper to m...

http://turtleylovingteaching.blogspot.com/2014/05/big-news.html

Wednesday, May 21, 2014. Well, it seems fitting to share my exciting news now that the school year is quickly coming to an end. I am beyond excited to share that I'm going to be stepping away from the classroom next year to become a Technology Integration Specialist for my school district! Of course, I will, but I'm hoping that with this new position that I'll be able to integrate into the classrooms as much as possible to assist staff/teachers (at least that is my goal). June 12, 2014 at 9:09 AM. Second...

Crafting Paragraphs from the Middle Out. When I am teaching my students how to write a paragraph, I begin with the middle sentences. I know, I just heard a collective *gasp* amongst you all. I know traditionally we have all started teaching paragraph writing with the topic sentence. I mean, that is what the kids are going to actually write about, right? So why not start with it? Let me show you how I do this with my students. Now, I am going to use my Paragraph of the Week. To do this. Why? Because I use...

Science and Social Studies. Body Systems Unit Wrap Up. The systems of the human body, and how they all function together, is a key standard for our fifth graders in science. So, as we wrapped up our unit, I wanted my students to put all the information they learned together into one, all encompassing presentation. So I broke out my trustee computer and created an easy to use template. For my kids to help guide them in reviewing all of the information they had learned throughout the course of our unit.

Teaching in Rwanda

Friday, 31 July 2015. Every time I see my friend, my hand says, Hello. Nkombo Island was our destination today. It started with a trip across the lake in a traditional Rwandan dugout. We were met at the island by many local children of all ages who escorted us to the nursery. At the nursery we were greeted by the singing of the welcome song and then the fun began. There was painting and glitter on a grand scale. We had a fantastic game with the parachute and how the children loved the bubbles! There were...

Teaching in Salvador

Friday, July 24, 2009. SENAC, UFBA and Departure. Wow - it's hard to believe this month has simply flown right by! I leave next Wed., so by all accounts I have only four days left. On Tuesday, at 5PM, I'll be reading fiction and poetry at the Casa Jorge Amado, and from what I've been told, I should expect A LOT of people, as the event is being advertised all over town, and Salvadorians like foreign art. No pressure. Posted by Jesse Waters. Tuesday, July 21, 2009. Here're the pics from last night - enjoy!
