There are, however, a few common types of taiko drums that are recognized and used by most taiko groups. The main odaiko player will usually play with his/her back facin.

When to Throw Out Bachi Sticks | Taiko Skin
http://taikoskin.blogspot.com/2011/03/when-to-throw-out-bachi-sticks.html
A Taiko Blog about Everything that has Anything to do with Taiko Drums. When to Throw Out Bachi Sticks. Photo by Omer van Kloeten. Most of us have the bad habit of using taiko sticks for too long. If they haven't snapped in half, or got chipped, then why not keep using them, right? These cracks are little splits in the wood, and the ends of the splits are surprisingly sharp. This means when you hit a drum with them, you're damaging the skins. Must They Be Thrown Out? I rarely used to check my sticks back...

Taiko Reverberations: Practice Pads
http://taikoreverberations.blogspot.com/2012/07/practice-pads.html
Sharing my love of Taiko. Saturday, July 28, 2012. I live on a 23 square mile island. A better way to think about it is that it's approximately five miles on a side. (it's not square, but this is for purposes of conversation) The point being that when I or the group I belong to practice taiko. Most of the island can hear it. Unfortunately, not all of my neighbors love taiko. As much as I do. So I needed a quieter way to practice. The solution? This is what I did:. I sanded the corners and edges to round ...

Taiko Reverberations: October 2011
http://taikoreverberations.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html
Sharing my love of Taiko. Saturday, October 29, 2011. When the glue had dried on the body for the katsugi. After all the wedges were in place and the glue was dry I once again did my 'squish test' to see how rigid the body felt and there was significantly less flex. I don't know if it's going to be enough bracing or not, but I'm trying to keep the drums light so I'm hesitant to add more. I'll run with it and see how it goes. Thursday, October 27, 2011. Gluing the katsugi oke daiko. Moving On . . . I gues...

Sharing my love of Taiko. Monday, November 28, 2011. Despite the fact that the drum head height of the shime. Higher. Since I love to experiment, a new design was in order. This stand places the top head of the shime. Four inches higher than the previous design. The construction was largely the same. I doweled and glued all the joins. The head of the triangle is held together with hinges so the stand will fold flat for storage and transport. And for a change of pace I painted it black. In addition to SF ...

Taiko Reverberations: February 2013
http://taikoreverberations.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html
Sharing my love of Taiko. Monday, February 4, 2013. Very Cool Practice Drums. One of the major problems all taiko. Groups face is the cost of drums. They're beautiful, they're loud, to drum on them is a spiritual experience, but they're very expensive. Groups find various solutions to this problem. Some groups, the like the one I'm member of, make their own drums. Other groups raise the money to buy drums from one of the major taiko. Drum manufacturers like Asano Taiko. I thought t hey were pretty cool.

Taiko Reverberations: March 2012
http://taikoreverberations.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html
Sharing my love of Taiko. Saturday, March 17, 2012. Here's the finished beast! I'm fairly happy-ish with how it came out. I've spent some time playing, though not a lot, and it's addicting. (and a great deal of fun! The sound is very bright with a fair amount of sustain. It came in at right about eleven pounds, I was shooting for under ten, but I think the body straps put me over the top. It can easily be lifted with one hand, and suspending it by a strap over one shoulder is no strain whatsoever. After ...

Sharing my love of Taiko. Saturday, May 5, 2012. And here it is in all it's weird little glory! I'm mostly happy with how it turned out and I'm very happy with how it sounds. A bit like a shime. But somehow richer. I already took it to class with me last week and a classmate and I spent time practicing with it. Noise was made, fun was had, all around a good evening. I think I like the look of the painted heads a great deal. I'm sure I'll be doing more drums like this in the future.
