Sailing with Kōan: March 2013
http://svkoan.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
Logs of the S/V Kōan, International Folkboat 1244. Wednesday, March 20, 2013. New shelf in the port locker. Converted the old fluorescent light fixtures to LED. I gutted the old fluorescent light fixtures of their innards, and hooked the terminals and switch up to two adhesive strips of 9 LEDs each. They work beautifully and consume 1/10th the power. Sunday, March 17, 2013. Monday, March 11, 2013. The old windows were the originals, and were finally beginning to leak. Monday, March 4, 2013. Lately I have...
Sailing with Kōan: October 2012
http://svkoan.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html
Logs of the S/V Kōan, International Folkboat 1244. Friday, October 12, 2012. Re-doing the cabin sole. Koan's cabin sole was upholstered in a non-skid patterned vinyl that was dirty and disgusting. I'd seen photos of other IFboats with that removed and I was really aching to get it off mine. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Other IF Boat blogs. Re-doing the cabin sole. Ken Kurlychek's IFBoat page. Sailing with Kōan: Ladies and gentlemen, we have solar!
http://svkoan.blogspot.com/2013/06/ladies-and-gentlemen-we-have-solar.html
Logs of the S/V Kōan, International Folkboat 1244. Saturday, June 1, 2013. Ladies and gentlemen, we have solar! A while back I ordered cheap, but allegedly accurate, digital voltmeters from ebay, and today I cut out holes in the tops of my battery boxes and installed them. I built them up so that they hook up to the batteries with little alligator clips, so they can be disconnected if need be. The improved battery situation. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Little did I know...: June 2012
http://ldik.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html
Little did I know. Steep learning curves are fun! Tuesday, June 12, 2012. Dome Rock and Kernville Slab. Jason at the top of Claustrophobia. A photo by slampoud. This past weekend my friend Jason, who now lives in the Bay area, and I were planning to spend some time plugging in gear. The original plan was to spend a day running up and down Tree Route on Dome Rock, then go down to Voodoo Dome and do Summer Sojourn, then further down to Kern Slab. The next morning we headed out to Dome Rock. We left for the...

Little did I know. Steep learning curves are fun! Friday, March 8, 2013. Fall and Winter recap. Dima on the approach to Purblind. Lest the reader (hi, all 3 of you! Think that there has been no climbing this past fall and winter, I would like to submit that I did do two trips. One was to Red Rocks in early November with Dima, then hooking up with the Minnesota crew, and the second was to JTree with part of the aforementioned MN crew. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Little did I know. Steep learning curves are fun! Wednesday, June 29, 2011. Playing in the Southern and Eastern Sierra. I'd rather be there. A photo by slampoud. Little did I know...: July 2011

Little did I know. Steep learning curves are fun! Wednesday, July 13, 2011. This year's Needles expedition - day 2, attack of the carabiner. Saturday morning found us sleeping in, so we decided to forgo the hike in to the Needles and opt for the lower elevation and shorter approach of Dome Rock, on which we had an objective, the Anti-jello crack. Tuesday, July 12, 2011. This year's Needles expedition - day 1. Me at the base of the second pitch of Spooky. Check out the crazy rock face! Mt Goode (in a day)...

Little did I know. Steep learning curves are fun! Monday, October 27, 2014. Climbing recap for most of 2014. Wow, I look back and realize I owe more than a year's worth of climbing updates. Yikes! So, last summer and fall I remember doing the following:. With Anil, me getting really bad nausea from wearing new, distorting sunglasses, and him getting a food allergy after we got down, but not before encountering a massive rattlesnake on the descent trail! Climbing on Dozier Dome (was it Holdless Horror.
Little did I know...: January 2013

Little did I know. Steep learning curves are fun! Wednesday, January 16, 2013. On the second day of our passage my SPOT satellite messenger malfunctioned. Popped off the back and took out the batteries. That did it. That's when the random stream of "Help" messages stopped. The next step that was being proposed was to scramble a C130 spotter plane. Once the USCG reached us, the situation was put to sleep quickly and in an orderly fashion. So, some distilled thoughts:. I think a chunk of the serenity praye...

Little did I know...: One more Red Rock
http://ldik.blogspot.com/2015/04/one-more-red-rock.html
Little did I know. Steep learning curves are fun! Monday, April 13, 2015. One more Red Rock. Then we moved to my old friend, Pauligk Pillar. There I had to over-protect the first few moves, resulting in a mid-route belay stop, and Jason led the second portion of the pitch. We weren't feeling the second pitch, AGAIN, so we hiked out to make the 8pm exit time. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. My other passion is sailing. Logs from Folkboat 1244, S/V Koan. One more Red Rock.

Little did I know. Steep learning curves are fun! Tuesday, October 4, 2011. We went, we saw, we didnt climb. That's Bear Creek Spire on the upper right. A photo by slampoud. Ben and I decided we wanted to attempt Bear Creek Spire. We both have the High Sierra Climbing supertopo, and we both looked at it and decided that we liked the idea of a destination that had two alternatives from which to choose: the 5.8 North Arete, and the low 5th class Northeast Ridge. The next morning we got a leisurely start, b...

Sailing with Kōan
Logs of the S/V Kōan, International Folkboat 1244. Monday, January 5, 2015. Moss Landing at last. In mid-July Kitty and I completed Koan's move to Moss Landing. The trip up was stunning. We encountered lots of whales in San Simeon Bay, South of Point Piedras Blancas, and motored along that stretch enjoying the show. If one were to hit us, we'd be goners. And on top of that, I wasn't quite sure how to observe the "do not harass whales" law which requires me to shut off my engine when within X feet (ca...
