Words and Music: November 2014

Sunday, November 30, 2014. Excerpt from ELI'S HEART. A Look Into Eli’s Heart. Is a love story. Eli Levin is born in the middle of the twentieth century with a frightening and complicated heart defect. He is also a piano prodigy. As a young teenager, he visits a small Southeastern town (Eli is a New Yorker) and meets Krissy Porter, a girl who is a few months younger. Yes, Eli’s Heart. FLYING HOME FROM MOSCOW. The twenty-two year old American violinist Warren Anderson had just been awarded the gold medal&#...
Words and Music: Creating Memories

Wednesday, July 8, 2015. How I Grew Up. Despite that flurry of activity, my summer was otherwise pretty quiet. The following spring I felt a little restless, once again having no show to direct. A friend suggested I write a book, and after some hesitation, I dove in. I’d always wanted to write a book. I had the time. Why not give it a try? Several months and many thousands of words later, I’d completed How I Grew Up. Now I was on a roll, and You Are My Song. Insisted I tell his story, so I did. And j...

Wednesday, February 25, 2015. You Are My Song/Eli's Heart. Writing You Are My Song. Was a very different experience from writing Eli's Heart. Eli Levin's story is full of drama because of the two challenges he has faced from birth: a prodigious talent and a frightening congenital heart condition. I recently described Jamie Logan, the young tenor in You Are My Song. That is the manner in which most pianists endowed in this way spend their lives. Many professional opera singers don’t begin serious st...

Monday, August 31, 2015. A Character Who Didn’t Make the Cut. There are a lot of words and a lot of scenes in Eli’s Heart. But not everything I wrote made it into the book. A writer’s conference I attended a couple of years ago left me with this gem: sometimes you need to write it, but the reader doesn’t need to read it. In other words, sometimes writing enriches your understanding of a character yet isn’t necessary to move the story forward. Where Peter and Wendy meet for the first time. She and her...

Monday, December 29, 2014. Good Job, Disney! Translating Stage to Screen. I am not a big fan of most films that are adaptations of stage musicals. Oklahoma! Was OK (sorry, pun intended). It has been years since I actually watched the film and there must be a reason for that. I really, really, really. Was not bad, but it seemed to me it dragged terribly. The stage production is very long, the movie seemed interminable. Of more recent films, I found Sweeney Todd. Has to be. My opinion is that the film ...

Friday, August 22, 2014. You Are My Song. TENORS AND HIGH C’S. On July first, Eli’s Heart. Was released on Amazon. On July third, I began to write my third book, which I’ve entitled You Are My Song. Today, August twenty-second, I completed the first draft of the book. It’s not a short book; probably between How I Grew Up. And Eli’s Heart. The story is of a young tenor who aspires to sing opera. I introduced Jamie Logan in How I Grew Up. When You Are My Song. 8221; and “Tenor Sing-Off – Faust ...And woe t...

Friday, July 24, 2015. To iPhone6 or not to iPhone6 … that is the question. Now that my iPhone 4S and I seem to be getting along better, I’m eligible for an upgrade. I went virtual shopping and found that I qualify for several different cell phones – the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, Galaxy 6. I didn’t even know what a Galaxy was but a little research told me it’s a Samsung product and people who use it love it. We really can do this nowadays? How the world has changed in the past fifty years! Group discussio...
Words and Music: Warts and All
http://susanmoorejordan.blogspot.com/2015/07/warts-and-all.html
Wednesday, July 15, 2015. I like my characters. Creating them was a work of love. But one of my readers in particular cautioned me constantly to not make them too perfect. I had to study them carefully to find their shortcomings and include them, in order to make them the interesting people my readers come to care about. I had to uncover their warts. It’s nice to read in reviews of Eli’s Heart. The characters of the stubborn, lovable, brilliant Eli and the wistful, loving Krissy are beautifully drawn .
Words and Music: A Long Ago Shooting

Tuesday, July 28, 2015. A Long Ago Shooting. Up From the Ashes. Over a half century ago, when I was a junior at Oak Ridge High School in Tennessee, my close friend Anita Barker’s parents were shot to death by Anita’s estranged brother-in-law. Anita was a talented girl who aspired to be a singer and actress. The shooting happened the weekend before auditions for the annual high school musical, which was Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel. I learned only recently the terrible toll those events took on Anit...

Wednesday, May 27, 2015. Sneak Peek: THE FANTASTICKS. My current writing project is a non-fiction book, working title Director’s Notes. Since I begin each chapter with the notes which were included in the printed program for the show. In the book I revisit some of the shows I directed over a period of thirty-plus years beginning in 1984. Here’s an excerpt. In preparing The Fantasticks. Does that – but it also makes you think about a lot of important life lessons. It’s easy to see why this...Beginning in ...

Monday, August 10, 2015. The Girl Who Won ELI’S HEART. It sometimes concerns me that people might look at the blurb for Eli’s Heart. And see it’s about a classical pianist with a bad heart, and think it’s not something they’d enjoy reading. It is all the above, but it’s also about a young man who wants what most young men want, a happy and fulfilling life, which includes being with the person he loves. She poured some Chianti in a small juice glass, stirred the sauce and tasted it, and took another sip o...

July 30, 2011. Maggie is probably the cutest teenager I know. Well ok, I’m being biased. This is my sister in law and she is seriously adorable! I loved being able to take her around and just explore. We had a blast! It took a little bit for her to open up for the camera, but in a few minutes she was an instant pro!
