We begin a new life in Italy . . . In the Kitchen with Rosy. By nuovastoria on December 8, 2014. Bosc pears are plentiful in fall and winter. They’re also the best choice for desserts because they hold their shape in baking. Chef Rosy Grottoli leads the Pascarosa group as they discover the flavors of the Pugliese kitchen. We started in the kitchen. Chef Rosy Grottoli in the Masseria Fumarola kitchen with just a few of the treats she shared with us. Little ear-shaped semolina pasta) with. Rosy’s deft touc...

Adventures in repairing and sailing boats (and other stuff). May 5, 2015. Weekend before last I had my first sail of the year. I was invited by “B” to go out on red boat (aka Luchador). I met him last year on “Old Shoes” and really enjoy his company. As most of you know, I like Florida so much, mostly because I hate being cold. But I have a new perspective on that. He informed me that there is no such thing as cold weather – just cold clothes. We put this to the test and went out in “brisk weather. So I&...

Adventures in repairing and sailing boats (and other stuff). Keel Winch Cable Eye Bolt – trouble in paradise. May 11, 2015. So you know how well the welding went fixing the hole for the keel pin. I’m still very excited about it. Sometimes I go out to the garage and just stare at it. It’s so perfect. The pin fits solidly, yet spins easily. Then I look at the other end. Things didn’t go so well there. Not a disaster, but not fixed either. Here it is before we started. Clearing rust around the keel eye bolt.

Happy Keel day | CapnRehab

Adventures in repairing and sailing boats (and other stuff). May 10, 2015. It finally happened. The day we’ve all been waiting for. I found a welder to fix the keel. I went back to my old standby, Craigslist. There I found 3 welders and emailed them all. One never replied. I got into a discussion with the other two about the job. I sent them both pictures and asked about welding cast iron. One said welding cast iron couldn’t be done and he wanted to build a brace around it:. I watched most of this remote...

Adventures in repairing and sailing boats (and other stuff). Winter storm – Winter blues. January 31, 2016. This is what I woke up to last Sunday. Winter storm Jonas visited us and gave us our first snow of the season. Mrs. CapnRehab was stuck at home by the storm without any project supplies and wound up extremely bored. She is a “slightly” energetic person, and in her enthusiasm to do something she decided to get outside and shovel snow. She did a great job on the sidewalk:. December 16, 2015. To get r...

We begin a new life in Italy . . . The Itria Valley countryside is dotted with trulli, circular stone dwellings with cone-shaped roofs and stone pinnacles on high. Mussels from the Mar Piccolo near Taranto are briny, sweet and lie at the heart of tiella alla Barese. Regina tomatoes strung together like a bunch of grapes is called a ramasole in Puglia. They’re preserved like this all winter long, surviving until the next season’s harvest begins. It’s a little trickier than it looks. You need nimble fi...

This Swiss chard, with its lush, deep green leaves and pale, thick stalks, spoke to me on such a cold, gray day. Stormy weather invites greater complexity in the kitchen. After all, what else is there to do? Washed, r...

The Catalina 22 Yacht's Log. Greg and Sandi's Catalina 22. Yacht: n. a vessel used for private cruising, racing, or other noncommercial purposes. Took the Boat Out for the Winter. Having saved our boat from disaster the day before, we decided we needed to take the boat out for the winter as soon as possible before another wind storm hit. Since there was no severe wind today, Sandi took the day off work and we brought it out. We then brought the mast down with our mast raising system. After securing e...
