NSSL/SPC Spring Experiment Blog. Extending the conversation about real-time high-resolution convection-allowing modeling. Tuesday, June 12, 2012. I left off the last post indicating that we know model biases, at least for the models that are coarser in grid spacing. But that is a lie. James Correia, Jr. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). NSSL/SPC Spring Experiment Blog. Extending the conversation about real-time high-resolution convection-allowing modeling. Thursday, May 16, 2013. So you think you can forecast? The atmosphere always has a surprise in store. After much debate about the goodness of the previous days crazy heat burst forecast and the subsequent realization that one occurred in Madison WI, we had some good discussion about what makes a good forecast. These issues always arise. Define good? Does the forecast add value? Is a y...

NSSL/SPC Spring Experiment Blog. Extending the conversation about real-time high-resolution convection-allowing modeling. Tuesday, May 14, 2013. It got really exciting when a few models were producing just enough storms in this moisture starved and superheated airmass to yield heat bursts in the hi res models. That got my attention and consequently became the running joke of the day. I even put an "H" in the area I thought might get a heat burst*! This was a tough forecast. Again the uncertainty rema...

This is only one case however. These variables were developed to detect supercell structures in the model, and may also be useful in other layers for the winter but still in low topped supercell environments. Testing will continue on ways to continue extracting valuable information from the models. Week 1: 4 slight risks. The NOAA HW...

The Satellite Proving Ground at the Hazardous Weather Testbed. Monday, April 27, 2015. Convection in the heart of Texas. An amplified trough and associated lee cyclone developed in west-central Texas Sunday afternoon, with a dryline generating strong supercell thunderstorms. The Storm Prediction Center upgraded their outlook to a moderate risk at 16:30 UTC for mainly large hail and strong tornadoes. Further south along the dryline, another storm had very strong. http://tornadoheadblog.blogspot.com/2013/01/observed-environment-of-substantial.html

Wwwtornadohead.com forecast blog. Wednesday, January 30, 2013. Observed environment of killer tornado in Adairsville GA. I modified the RAOB very slightly via cooling the near-surface layer a bit to be perhaps more representative of the inflow; while the surface wind on the RAOB looked sufficiently representative. Am not getting terribly cute regardless given some showers existed in the inflow environment. The storm was certainly an EL-buster based on the echo tops/visible satellite presentation.
