Southern Ontario Fly Fisher: Storm

http://southernontarioflyfisher.blogspot.com/2009/04/storm.html

Southern Ontario Fly Fisher. Mister Anchovy's fly fishing journal. Saturday, April 25, 2009. By the time I stepped into the river, it was already after 3:00. It was sunny, warm and breezy. There were some small mayflies coming off, but no trout rising. I messed around with soft-hackles and streamers for a while, when I noticed a dark cloud in the north. The wind picked up and the cloud came toward the steam quickly. Well, I didn't get much fishing in, but it was good to get out, even for a short while.

Southern Ontario Fly Fisher: Trout season opens next week-end in Ontario

http://southernontarioflyfisher.blogspot.com/2009/04/trout-season-opens-next-week.html

Southern Ontario Fly Fisher. Mister Anchovy's fly fishing journal. Sunday, April 19, 2009. Trout season opens next week-end in Ontario. For me, opening day is about checking out a stream. What happened over the winter? Are there any new, promising runs and pools? It's an opportunity to organize my gear and make sure I'm ready for some good spring fishing ahead. It's also a chance to do a little casting, after a long winter. Posted by mister anchovy at 10:03 PM. Links to this post:. The Grand above Fergus.

Southern Ontario Fly Fisher: Holy Waters

http://southernontarioflyfisher.blogspot.com/2009/07/holy-waters.html

Southern Ontario Fly Fisher. Mister Anchovy's fly fishing journal. Monday, July 06, 2009. The name Holy Waters was coined in the early 1970s by the late Cal Gates, owner of Gates' Au Sable Lodge, a fly fishing mecca located on the south bank of the famed stream. I don't expect to get on many rivers during the heat of July and part of August, but I'll be out looking for isonychias later in August and into September. Posted by mister anchovy at 7:27 AM. What a great idea for a trip. Well, it turns out my b...

Southern Ontario Fly Fisher: August 2006

http://southernontarioflyfisher.blogspot.com/2006_08_01_archive.html

Southern Ontario Fly Fisher. Mister Anchovy's fly fishing journal. Sunday, August 27, 2006. Evenings on the Crowsnest. The highlights of our week in Alberta were evenings on the Crowsnest. There was a reliable baetis hatch - 18s and 20s, mixed with some pmds, a few bigger mayflies (flavs? During the day, fishing was slow on the river, with the larger trout seeking cover in the hot sun. This is the time to find a cutthroat stream and chuck some attractors. Posted by mister anchovy at 3:24 PM. I started fi...

RANDOM CASTS: July 2008

Fly Fishing Canada's East Coast. Monday, July 28, 2008. We're having company. our captivating new grand-daughter is coming to visit us in August - all the way from California! She's a bit too young for fishing, but I know her dad (and maybe mom, too) would enjoy some fly fishing. In spite of this, I'm trying to come up with a fly fishing day trip (or two) during their one-week stay. Let's see what the local options are. Smallmouth Bass fishing in Ten Mile Lake. Chain Pickerel in Louis Lake. I have an opt...

RANDOM CASTS: September 2008

http://randomcasts.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html

Fly Fishing Canada's East Coast. Thursday, September 18, 2008. Canoe Safety on the River. The Medway is a big river with plenty of deep holes and lots of fast water (Class III and IV rapids, for you whitewater junkies). It's not a river you can wade safely in many places. It's also relatively undeveloped - as in forest growth right up to the shoreline. For gaining access to the best fishing pools, a canoe can be the answer. Buy a small pulley about 1" to 2" (2.5 - 5 cm) in diameter. Next, mount a stainle...

Fly Fishing Canada's East Coast. Monday, April 20, 2009. Buy Me A Salmon? Meeting new people can be awkward sometimes, when value systems collide. I talked with a new acquaintance about my experiences living on the river - "Any fish in it? He inquired. When I mentioned our remnant Atlantic Salmon population, he enthusiastically asked if I had a net set. I was horrified. I tried to explain that the salmon were of much greater value in the river than in a net. Yeah, but they're some tasty" he countered.

Fly Fishing Canada's East Coast. Sunday, March 22, 2009. Economic Downturn = Boom in Fishing? Again, I am reminded of the saying, "It's an ill wind that blows no good". That's because I saw an article in Newser. Reporting that the economic downturn is sparking a boom in recreational fishing. Good Luck and Good Fishin',. Posted by Random Phrump. Links to this post. RANDOM CASTS: June 2008

http://randomcasts.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html

Fly Fishing Canada's East Coast. Saturday, June 7, 2008. Kiacks on the Medway. The Medway River is one of many Maritime waterways known for its prolific run of kiacks. In other places, they are referred to as gaspereau, alewife, or Alosa pseudoharengus. I would be interested to hear from anyone who has caught kiacks with an artificial fly - either by design, or incidentally, in the pursuit of other species. PS: Check out this video of kiacks in freshwater. Good Luck and Good Fishin! Links to this post.

Fly Fishing Canada's East Coast. Saturday, April 26, 2008. You learn to bite your tongue when you love someone. Last night, my son, Dave, told me he'd lost his keys, and I stopped myself from saying, "How do people lose their keys? I never lose my keys.". Anyway, I'm sitting here blogging instead of fishing (which is what I really want to do) and instead of looking for my keys (which is what I really should be doing), because. I've lost my keys! Good Luck and Good Fishin'! Posted by Random Phrump. It dep...

http://randomcasts.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html

Fly Fishing Canada's East Coast. Thursday, August 25, 2011. Canceling the School Dance on the Medway. Yesterday, I read in the local weekly newspaper that the Medway River is closed to all angling from the Greenfield Bridge to the Hwy 103 bridge from July 11 to August 15, 2011. This is in response to complaints about people catching and releasing salmon under the guise of trout angling, the article explains. So, are they poachers? No, what they are is opportunists - fellow anglers who can't resist the te...

RANDOM CASTS: Dick Tracy, do you read me?

http://randomcasts.blogspot.com/2009/03/dick-tracy-do-you-read-me.html

Fly Fishing Canada's East Coast. Sunday, March 22, 2009. Dick Tracy, do you read me? When I was a kid I used to enjoy reading the classic Dick Tracy series in the daily comics. The best thing about Dick Tracy was the cool wristwatch that he always wore. It was a miniature 2-way communication device featuring wireless audio and video. I always wondered if someday everyone would have one. We're not quite there yet, but here's a new fish-finder device, the Humminbird Smartcast 35. Good Luck and Good Fishin'.
