one thousand secret kings: June 2007
http://secretkings.blogspot.com/2007_06_01_archive.html
One thousand secret kings. Friday, June 15, 2007. All right. First things first. My grandmother died several months ago following a long coma. It was, frankly, a little miraculous that she hung on as long as she did. The sort of injury she sustained to her head should have killed her within hours; the doctors didn't know what to do with this old woman who refused to die. They didn't know my family. I come from a long line of mean bitches, and my grandmother was the meanest bitch of them all. My father re...

One thousand secret kings. Tuesday, June 27, 2006. I can't wait to fly. I, of course, was more of an X-Man child. Don't get me wrong. Superman was great. I loved Superman. But that was sort of the problem, you know? Loved Superman. Superman was the embodiment of the cool kids' crowd. He was strong, and handsome, and had women swooning after him, and even in a faaaa. The X-Men were loathed by everybody. Nobody thought of them as heroes, except for those of us observing their universe from the outside&...

One thousand secret kings. Wednesday, December 13, 2006. Isn't it odd how you can feel the most out of place on those days where you feel the most like you're at home? Posted by Peter at 8:28 AM. West of the moon. Three Short Stories About Family.

one thousand secret kings: July 2005

One thousand secret kings. Thursday, July 28, 2005. Wednesday evening here, we made grilled vegetables and pasta tricolore. If I were a wiser man, I would be preparing myself for the end of the summer, the start of classes, the enforced brevity of this relationship. But I have never been wise. Tonight is my turn. I am making white grape martinis and burgers with a blue cheese sauce. And - have I mentioned? The view of the sunset is beautiful from my house. Posted by Peter at 9:29 AM. West of the moon.

one thousand secret kings: March 2006

One thousand secret kings. Tuesday, March 14, 2006. California was never like this. On Friday the chill lifted slightly, and the length of State Street grew thick with college kids starting their spring breaks one day early. It's not warm out yet, but it's warm enough, and the rest of us threw off our scarves and heavy coats and ran out to join them. These days never happened in California, you know? Every day this place feels a little closer to home. Posted by Peter at 9:28 AM. West of the moon.

one thousand secret kings: November 2006
http://secretkings.blogspot.com/2006_11_01_archive.html
One thousand secret kings. Wednesday, November 22, 2006. I seem to be completely unable to write original prose nowadays. Instead, I offer you yet another blurb from my archives, this time from a group blog called specialagency.net that lasted for, like, two months. An elaborately embroidered silk garment that had been passed down through generations of my family to me. Tolerance", I suppose, is a bit better. "Tolerance" at least moves us away from outright violence between minority groups. But m...Was t...

One thousand secret kings. Sunday, October 22, 2006. Tiny worlds, worlds apart. The world is tiny. At a party last night, I met a guy who, after about an hour, I realized was a blogger I used to link to back in the day (velcro.prosaic.nu), back before either of us had retired our blogs and moved out here to the tundra. You see, it's not just Madison that's small, it's the whole world. That was just over a year ago, right before I had moved to the tundra. For another, where would I go? And finally, I'm no...

One thousand secret kings. Saturday, September 02, 2006. A year in the life. In what may be the surest sign that summer is finally over, winter squash have started arriving at the farmers market. Early morning vegetable shoppers, pushing their children along in oversized strollers, eye the small. jaundiced acorn squash with a suspicious sort of distrust, as if these sad misshapen gourds are unwelcome interlopers at a summer party. 1 Everybody is friendlier after a beer or two. one thousand secret kings: April 2006
http://secretkings.blogspot.com/2006_04_01_archive.html
One thousand secret kings. Wednesday, April 26, 2006. Last week I found myself sitting in a hotel room in Century City wondering if I would still hate living in LA as much now as I did back then. There are still a lot of things I don't like about this place. I hate the smog. I hate the soul-crushing grind of stalled traffic on the 405. I hate the scrunchy, plasticized faces of the washed-out failed actors masquerading as morning news anchors on KTLA. Posted by Peter at 11:07 PM. Monday, April 24, 2006.

One thousand secret kings. Thursday, December 29, 2005. Ten Resolutions For The Rest Of Us. How many years in a row have you made the same three or four resolutions and failed to keep them? You said you'd exercise more, but did you? You said you'd eat better, but did you? You said you'd be nicer to everyone, but let's face it, honey, you're the same hateful bitch you were a year ago, and you love it. In 2006 I resolve to:. I spit gnocchi on your grave! 2 Screw the gym! 6 Self-medicate. Who needs self...
