Served his time at Timber Boat Services in Snails Bay - one of the last traditional boatyards in Balmain. He trained under ex-Cockatoo Island shipwrights Richard Wood and Nigel Shannon. Prior to training as a shipwright Simon was a qualified Industrial Designer and worked at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Darling Harbour Sydney. Simon employs one other Shipwright Paul Sunnucks. Who served his time at Garden Island, and has taken on his first apprentice Troy Lawrence.

The current project in the Boatshed is Windward. Owned by Australian artist John Firth-Smith. Windward is a 40 foot centreboard gaff cutter built for Mr A. Muston in 1923 by J. Hayes and Sons at Careening Cove, Sydney to a design by J.W.Pickering of Balmain. After 83 years of racing and extensive cruising Windward had been modernised is now being restored to her original configuration when she was first launched complete with her centreboard and gaff cutter rig with Jackyard topsail.
