sansfife: July 2015
http://www.sansfife.com/2015_07_01_archive.html
Circle up, prime. Sunday, July 26, 2015. This could be the summer of the drum. Was abandoned months ago. There were lots of reasons for that. Multiple obligations, dwindling participation, stagnant momentum. It was time to move on, and that was a good choice, wal-hamdu lillah. But seeds were planted. And we're seeing a little fruit. I got a call recently from a brother who used to come out for the drumming. He's getting married. He wants a drum circle facilitated at his wedding feast. That's how you do it.

Circle up, prime. Saturday, May 23, 2015. Is so much more than a great drum shop, masha Allah. It's the whole West African thing. And I'm new to it, but man, what a kick! I'd only been out there once before and I picked up some djun-djuns:. I was sent there after being turned on to West African drumming by my dear friend and brother, Andrew Dahl-Bredine. He did me right, God bless him. After that last trip and today's drum circle, they're going to know my name at Motherland. Saturday, May 16, 2015. If yo...

sansfife: The Parting Glass
http://www.sansfife.com/2015/06/the-parting-glass.html
Circle up, prime. Monday, June 1, 2015. A friend of mine sent me a piece of music. He wanted to know what I thought of it, what genre it might represent, and whether said genre was "primal.". There is sublime beauty in simplicity. Perhaps a benefit that will come out of our living in a period of relentless stimulation is the renewed appreciation of simplicity, of an undecorated ballad well sung. Beautiful, simple ballads. I started poking around and I found something really nice. But the song comes first...

sansfife: November 2014
http://www.sansfife.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Circle up, prime. Sunday, November 30, 2014. Family Drum Recap and an Interview. It was a week ago today that our community gathered to celebrate one another with drum and voice. It's been a long time coming. Where has our singing and drumming taken us? On boats, in battle, for joy, or out of existential bewilderment, our drums and our voices continue to ring out. And I'd like for us to think about our night at the Zawiya. As an historic link to that incredible musical chain. The opening groove was hit o...

sansfife: Frame Drum and Cajon
http://www.sansfife.com/2015/05/cajon-and-frame-drum.html
Circle up, prime. Sunday, May 10, 2015. Frame Drum and Cajon. I picked up a cajon. Awhile back. It's a subversive little box, a subterfuge on the part of African slaves in South America who were denied their drums. They had all kinds of boxes around, a consequence of their work loading and unloading ships. A few creative tweaks and these indefatigable men had their drums, right under the noses of their misanthropic keepers. Like these guys. This video is really unique for a few reasons. First of ...FOLI ...

sansfife: CSULB Pow Wow 2015
http://www.sansfife.com/2015/03/csulb-pow-wow-2015.html
Circle up, prime. Thursday, March 12, 2015. CSULB Pow Wow 2015. Is a gathering of the North American indigenous peoples. The plains Indians got this going awhile back, but now it's really about people from all tribes getting together to catch up and have a good time as they preserve and share their respective cultures. Think ISNA. While there are pow wows happening all the time, one of the more engaging ones I've been to is coming up this weekend, March 14-15 at California State University Long Beach.
