Ryan's Chang

Sunday, May 10, 2015. Hawaiian Rare Plant Program. I with a few other friends got to tour the Lyon Arboretum Hawaiian Rare Plant Program. A friend of a friend reached out to me and ask if I'd like to come tour the facility. Of course I jumped on it and here is what we saw. The program's facilities have three different sections. The micropropagation lab, seed lab, and the greenhouse. Here is the tissue culture library! This place holds roughly 250 plants of the 1400 Hawaiian plant taxa. Looking through al...

Ryan's Chang: Native Forest Birds

http://www.ryanschang.blogspot.com/2014/12/native-forest-birds.html

Friday, December 5, 2014. I haven't been updating my blog but I've been so busy enjoying life. Over the past few months I've taken up an interest in photographing birds, the birds you rarely see. You need to go deep into the mountains where most of the forest is dominated by ohia and koa trees to find these colorful, beautiful, and small, winged animals. I was instantly hooked then and there. How could I have not seen these birds since I started hiking! Apapane on some ohia canopy. What's pretty amazing ...

Ryan's Chang: December 2013

http://www.ryanschang.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html

Thursday, December 19, 2013. Over the past few years I've always been on the hunt for Christmas lights around neighborhoods. Every year I always seem to take new people trying to perpetuate the feel of the Christmas spirit through going to see Christmas lights. It's not your ordinary Honolulu Downtown Christmas light show. I like to take in the views created by everyday people trying to stand out and be creative with their own homes. Two homes had lights synchronized to the music! The entire front side o...

Tuesday, February 18, 2014. The Water Commission is responsible for managing all of the State’s water resources, including its underground aquifers, rivers and streams, and serves as “the trustee who oversees the rightful sharing of water.” But what does “the rightful sharing of water” actually mean? What will we drink when our aquifers run dry? These are not imagined futures. Unless we change our relationship to water, this may be our future. For more information feel free to check out the Water Commiss...

Ryan's Chang: October 2014

http://www.ryanschang.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Monday, October 27, 2014. Panorama trail to Yosemite Valley floor. I think the best hike we did during our stay was this hike. Panorama trail starts high above the valley floor at Glacier Point. The plan was to take a shuttle up to Glacier point and hike our way down to the valley floor where we would leave our car. On the Mist Trail we saw the bottom of Vernal Falls, a big pool that people were swimming in. It looked inviting but it would have made us late for pizza! Sick views of Half Dome. We headed t...

Hiking and other stuff. Saturday, April 26, 2014. April 26, 2014 Ho`omana`o `Ana o Ke Kaua Lelea`anae (Commemoration of the Battle of Nu`uanu). In 1795 Kamehameha battled with Kalanikūpule for control of O`ahu. The battle for O`ahu culminated in Nu`uanu Valley and what is today called the Pali Lookout. I woke up at 3:30 am and drove up to the Nu`uanu Pali Lookout for Ho`omana`o `Ana o Ke Kaua Lelea`anae. It was a windy and rainy morning. I felt for the young men who endured the cold in only their malo.

Hiking and other stuff. Saturday, May 16, 2015. May 2015 Halema`uma`u Lava Lake. The inner crater at Halema`uma`u filled with lava to the point the it was overflowing onto the crater floor and was clearly visible from the Jaggar Museum overlook. I headed to Hilo with my father and stayed at my brother's house in Hawaiian Paradise Park to see Halema`uma`u in action. The first night (about 1:00 am) it was cloudy and rainy. The Jaggar overlook was nearly empty. The lava lake was spectacular! NEW- ] I'll cal...

Hiking and other stuff. Wednesday, March 13, 2013. March 12, 2013 Comet Pan-STARRS (C/2011 L4). Tuesday night I wanted to catch a glimpse of Comet Pan-STARRS. As it made it's appearance in the night sky, just after sunset. I took Hōkūle`a with me and we headed up in the hills above Honolulu, to the trail head. For the Kalawahine trail. Up on Tantalus (Pu`u `Ōhi`a). Hōkū and I enjoyed the sunset and the crescent moon while I set up to try and catch the comet. The view from Tantalus is amazing! NEW- ] I'll...

Hiking and other stuff. Thursday, July 24, 2014. July 6, 2014 Halema`uma`u. Wouldn't be a trip to the Big Island without visiting Halema`uma`u. Especially at night. The crater lookout at the Jaggar. Being that it was Fourth of July weekend Volcano National Park. Had park rangers lining up traffic and parked cars down the road leading to the lookout. I've never seen the lookout so packed! Made for a spectacular sunset. Sunset illuminated clouds over Mauna Loa. People were lined up along the lookout wall.

Hiking and other stuff. Monday, August 19, 2013. August 3, 2013 Pai`olu`olu Point Rock Bridge (Koko Head). Finally got out to the Rock Bridge at Pai`olu`olu. The Southern/Western point on the rim of Hanauma Bay. The hike up Kuamoʻokāne. Koko Head) and out to Pai`olu`olu is short but HOT! There is NO shade along the trail. Today was a great day to be out hiking, but the sun was blazing! We definitely did not take enough water on this hike. While making our way down to the twin craters of Nonoʻula. July 27...

However, once I saw the roof of the cabin peeking out from the fenceline, my energy levels rose since our stay was in the middle of ocean ridges and the Waianae range in front. It was a gorgeous view, I was trying to absorb that I'm really staying in the mountains, nicely sheltered in the middle of beautiful nowhere. Start time- 6:15 am.

thoughts from where i am now

Thoughts from where i am now. A bit about myself. First quarter at OSU; wherein I write for far too long on things about which no one but myself cares. I began a Ph.D. in the Near Eastern Languages and Cultures department at The Ohio State University and have enjoyed it thus far. This program is strongly focused on languages so I ended up taking German, Arabic and Hebrew courses this quarter and will be adding Syriac to that mix the next quarter and probably Latin in the Summer. Rolling through Inglewood...

The greatest lesson in life is to know that even fools are right sometimes. Life really can throw one for a loop! Thursday, July 16, 2009. Well hello there.  It seems like it has been forever since I last posted….Oh wait it has been.  I am so sorry for that.  After all that has happened in the last few months I really need an outlet to help me get rid of some of this stress.  So let’s hope blogging helps. .
