Retreat | Becca Lawton

June 24, 2013 · 9:03 pm. They are on Safari in Africa, a heartland they’ve always wanted to explore. While they travel they’ve trusted me with their custom California foothills home and dog named Creek. River in the rain. At first, the silence of the hundreds of unpeopled acres all around threw me. What was I thinking? How would I work away from the familiar views out my own office window? How would I sleep at night without my husband and cat resting near me? Was I here to sleep, perchance to dream?

Monthly Archives: August 2013. August 5, 2013 · 5:03 pm. What is this malaise? This lack of focus and ennui. Combined with a skimming restlessness? My mind won’t settle on anything for more than an instant. The piles of paper around me are growing, escaping my recycle bin. I can’t seem to force myself to get to work on them or anything else. Those short stories I was revising religiously every morning? Today my mind is a cloud pushed by the wind. I had missed my most creative time, when my circadian rhyt...

https://beccalawton.wordpress.com/2013/07/10/fire-2
July 10, 2013 · 9:57 am. Fire in the night. I’d seen light through the skylight before, but only during the Grande Finale that ends the Fourth of July fireworks. But that was over days ago. And it was not this red. As I woke more, the light show faded. The red in the sky dimmed. The owls went silent, and the forest behind our home remained cool and green. It couldn’t have been just my eyes. I’d seen the fire. It had lasted long enough to wake me from sound sleep. You knew what you had to do,. A night of ...

Monthly Archives: April 2013. April 29, 2013 · 1:31 am. There’s no turning away from a good fight in fiction and film: the thrill of the coliseum in Gladiator. The clash of north and south in. The battle of wills in The Great Gatsby,. The clash of class in Atonement. Even when we think we know who’s going to win the day, a well-staged battle will pull us to the edge of our seats, fingers crossed that the outcome isn’t too painful to watch or accept. And look at our protagonist’s weapons! Frankie Rose liv...

Babies | Becca Lawton

July 26, 2013 · 10:07 am. I admit that when I pull the card about babies, I stick it back in the deck. What deck, you wonder? 8220;Ask and It Is Given,” by Esther and Jerry Hicks, Law of Attraction gurus. The deck was a gift from my co-author and friend, Jordan E. Rosenfeld. Forged in Grace, Make a Scene,. And our lovely, collaborative. What is the card I reject? The one that says, “But What about Those Innocent Little Babies? Still, “the babies”? Why, I wonder, does this card keep coming up? I’ll ...
