Here is the woods that I prefer to use when making my bows and my thoughts on them. Yew; Well i hope this wood needs no introduction, for selfbows there is nothing else like it. Yew is a soft wood and needs to be treated with care. The light coloured part is the sap wood and has natural elasticity, the darker shade is the heart wood and this natually resists compression. All my longbows come with a braided handle of varying colour but if you want me to leave it off and just to have the bare wood or want a linen string handle there is no extra charge, just mention this when ordering. To a total beginner i would strongly advise you to go to an archery range and have a go before purchasing a longbow. If you want to shoot regularly at a club i would recommend a laminated longbow as they are economical, consistent and hardy.
