In Recognition of Leadership. By John Cantey Knight. The axiom is true:. Cream rises to the top,. But it also sours. I’ve tasted. Its curdled waste. I’m not. Enamored with the management. Try these: chaff rides. The wind, and pond scum floats. The Redneck Review 2007.

My husband has an idea for a fan that sucks in air,. Rather than blow it out, that he’s sure could abolish ants. At picnics. He’d like to be the first rep to export Splenda. To Europe, most of which still relies on saccharin. He can’t see why there isn’t an infant’s car seat. That has wheels and legs that fold underneath,. So it could double as a stroller. His hypothetical Filipino restaurant,. The Adobo Hut, serves up chicken and pork stew, made with soy sauce. And we’d retire early as millionaires.

South Carolina, 1969. She was an old maid, Froggy was,. And she was mean, with bulging eyes. That strained more when she got cross,. And a lumpy sack of gland-swollen throat. We thought her some crazy crone who. Took delight in chastising the innocent. Her classroom seemed our punishment,. As we were dubbed the smart ones. But among our bunch the usual stunts. Were devised, and her madness was. The antidote to our attempts at anarchy. I mostly don't remember her abuses-. Except the shrill, cracking voice.

I'm in Changsha Children's Center Number 1 holding only. The baby assigned to me. Although it's bright outside, in here. It's dim, heavy with heat and infants flat on their backs on bamboo. For some reason, all the helpful Chinese women caretakers. Are gone. There are at least forty babies sprawled in the half-light,. And most of them are crying. Perhaps one is hungry, another. Thirsty, one burning in a soaked diaper, and I am here. Holding only one of them. I look across the room and see another.

I don't want you to get the wrong idea, I am not some huge Jodi Picoult fan, but the following quote is from an interview with the author on The Guardian. Website.
