Class 17 and 18: Not with a whimper… | Pura Vida Dogme
https://puravidadogme.wordpress.com/2012/06/12/class-17-and-18-not-with-a-whimper
Dogme Action Research in Costa Rica. Class 17 and 18: Not with a whimper. Posted by Ben Naismith. Asymp; Leave a comment. It’s taken a while, but now that I’ve made it through my first week in Dubai, I finally have a chance to reflect on my final class with the Pura Vida Dogme group. I’m calling this one class 17 and 18 as it included a two-hour class followed by two hours conversation in English in the local cantina something I’ll sorely miss. Right from the get go. I felt like this part of the lesson w...
Class 12: The Scottish Accent: Easier Than American | Pura Vida Dogme

Dogme Action Research in Costa Rica. Class 12: The Scottish Accent: Easier Than American. Posted by Chris Ożóg. Asymp; Leave a comment. This class was all about accents. There’s a number of different examples of these floating about the class, given that Ben’s Canadian, I’m Scottish and the group are Costa Ricans. Such exposure surely can’t be a bad thing. But where are all the comparatives? They are closer to the border, they speak more Nicaraguan. A big difference [comparative form]. The first: write 5...

EAP Dogme style @ Masaryk University: The run up | keepitrealELT

Reflections on authenticity in teaching and learning. EAP Dogme style @ Masaryk University: The run up. Just before Christmas I had a wonderful long weekend in Brno in the Czech Republic where I led two days of workshops, for PhD students and teachers at Masaryk Uni. I was invited after my BALEAP workshop on Dogme and EAP back in April last year. The BALEAP workshop was unplugged as much as possible; how else could I demonstrate the approach and get across the value I see in it? Is there such a thing?

Learning Hindi | keepitrealELT
https://keepitrealemma.wordpress.com/learning-hindi
Reflections on authenticity in teaching and learning. It’s language learning but not as we know it – Beginner’s Hindi. I have started studying Hindi. I started 2 weeks ago and the back of my notebook already has a page of notes on things I have learnt about the way I teach (the front of the notebook has Hindi in it, don’t worry! Each week I’ll add some musings. Upon arrival, my teacher gave me my very own exercise book and pen, and I mean. Rapport can be built not just with words but also with actions...

Reflections on authenticity in teaching and learning. The first time I set foot in a classroom not as a student was at Leeds University to hold a seminar for undergraduate Classics students on Ancient Greek Tragedy. What intrigued me most was how people learn, particularly how people behave and interact during this learning process, their personalities, intentions and desires to express themselves. Taskmaster!!! | ELT Stew
https://eltstew.wordpress.com/2015/06/18/taskmaster
Random thoughts on all things related to teaching or learning a language. So apparently movies in the Marvel ‘Cinematic Universe’ have grossed over $3,400,745,593 dollars. That’s 3.4 b-b-b-billion for 11 movies with a whole slate of follow-up on-screen bombast en route to complete their cinematic world subjugation. Not too shabby eh? I’d argue though that the studio masterminds have left money on the table by overlooking a key figure in their comic book source material, the 1980’s anti-hero. With the kin...
Listen to who? | ELT Stew
https://eltstew.wordpress.com/2014/05/04/listen-to-who
Random thoughts on all things related to teaching or learning a language. I love student output. Discussions, presentations, debates, stories you name it, I’m into it (assuming it’s meaningful to the people speaking). I listen, comment, scribble notes, think of ways to extend it, all that good stuff. Peers write questions to ask about the presentation. My usual go-to, this one is a classic for a reason it’s simple to set up, works with any topic, and can be managed at any level. Definitely not a task tha...
Follow the leader (and become a supreme leader!) | ELT Stew
https://eltstew.wordpress.com/2013/12/30/follow-the-leader-and-become-a-supreme-leader
Random thoughts on all things related to teaching or learning a language. Follow the leader (and become a supreme leader! Leader, leadership, be a leader, become a leader, leaders in the classroom, better leaders, leader leader leader. You know when you say a word so many times that it ceases to have all meaning? Apart from the fact that the second question presumes an answer to the first one, what are they on about? Why can’t teachers be seen as teachers? PS If you are ever interested in giving a confer...
Down a reflective rinvoludicrous rabbit hole… | ELT Stew
https://eltstew.wordpress.com/2015/01/30/down-a-reflective-rinvoludicrous-rabbit-hole
Random thoughts on all things related to teaching or learning a language. Down a reflective rinvoludicrous rabbit hole. If you haven’t read the EnglishDroid Rinvolucri interview. Read that instead of this! Final week of another CELTA course, and not surprisingly, the ol’ mental acuity might be slipping a bit. Time for an inner-grammatical biscuit! But is this going far enough? 8211; Blank verse poetry. 8211; Feedback set to Russian lullabies and military marches. 8211; A map. 8211; A flow chart (exciting!

Reflections on authenticity in teaching and learning. An Exploration of a Negotiated Syllabus. Reflections on another attempt at a more authentic learning experience…. I used to teach an Advanced Writing module for CEFR C1 level Erasmus/Study Abroad students. When I stepped into the module leader shoes in 2012 I decided to trial a semi-negotiated syllabus. This post will detail the steps and decisions I took when doing so and feedback and reflections on its outcomes. One definition of a syllabus. For thi...

This hooch is the first of many that we are planning for various locations on the mountaintop and jungle valley. There’s talk of rope bridges connecting some of them, and possibly a zip line for the hooches down in the jungle! We’re also planning an in-ground pool with a cabana area for relaxing as well as a few other lodging options. We’re planning a major development trip in January, so stayed tuned to the website here for the latest updates on our progress! Eric Sargent on Hello world!
