5 tips on how not to write a novel. I am happy (sort of) that I am so well qualified to write this, for two reasons:. If a single person avoids one of these mistakes then I have saved them loads of pain. Because mistakes mean you grow and learn. Or something. Tip 1: Back up your work – yes, it can happen to you. I started writing ‘Oceanheart’ in (gulp, it kills me that it took so long) April 2008. I managed to write. I can tell you there were a lot of tears. Save yourself: back up your work.
