Aboriginal history of the Paterson Valley. Aboriginal people have inhabited the east coast of Australia for at least 17,000 years and probably earlier. Baiame is the keeper of the Hunter Valley and the ancestral being of its people. He created the earth and sent other spirits to form the natural features of the land. Overview of Paterson history from 1822. The penal settlement at Newcastle severely restricted the use of the Paterson area by Europeans. From 1804 convicts could be sent to Newcastle if they re-offended in the Colony, and until 1822 Newcastle was a closed port. Ships required permission to enter the harbour and widespread settlement was banned to deprive convicts of food, shelter and support in the countryside if they ran away from Newcastle. I went out to Paterson to take a look around and to take some pictures last week to get a feel of the place. It is a lovely little town very rural and the back drop in the distant of the mountains is very pretty.
