What have we to learn from this terrible decade in former Yugoslavia? Drawing on the history of the Middle East to explain current events is a welcome, and unfortunately altogether rare, practice, but one that can also just as easily be abused. Joshua Landis and Elias Nabki share some interesting thoughts. On the t...

Our man in Japan | Exploring the impact of RFID on daily life
Our man in Japan. Exploring the impact of RFID on daily life. Privacy and personal data in Japan. Posted May 11, 2007 by Wouter SCHILPZAND. Privacy is a big thing for us Europeans. As soon as a possible infringement is perceived, we collectively climb the barricades to fight for all that’s just and holy. As a cultural concept, it’s proven very powerful and very successful. But the notion of privacy is not that old, being a typical result of the 18. This may be changing as Japanese youngsters readily adop...
Our Man in Japan
Our Man in Japan. Sunday, 27 May 2012. After 1 year, 1 month and 20 days, my time is up. During this time, I think I have experienced more things than I have in the previous five years combined! Stretching for 2,892 km from the snows of Hokkaido to the tropics of Okinawa, there is so much to enjoy in Japan. For the last time, thank you for reading and take care. Our Man in Japan. Above: A video of the chime in my local ward of Tokyo. Shiroyama Plaza Garden, Kamiyacho, Tokyo. Posted by Our Man in Japan.

Our Man In… Japan. Finding The World's Hidden Stories…. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. Switch Off, Smile On. September 27, 2011. Currently Japan is suffering large power shortages, and Japanese people have been encouraged to cut back on their energy consumption as much as possible. (See this link to Alex Hart’s article. But should these beneficial effects be localized to Japan as the area most directly affected by the disaster? In Germany and Switzerland, public will against nuclear ...

Our Man in Korea | travelling around Korea, and beyond
What’s it about? Our Man in Korea. Travelling around Korea, and beyond. Buam-dong – quietly cool. Asymp; 1 Comment. Behind the old fortress wall in the mountains north-west of Gyeongbuk Palace, Buam-dong has all the good things that Seoul’s trendier neighbourhoods have, with the added benefit of a slightly remote, peaceful location. Buam-dong’s mountain background, low brick buildings and quiet streets make you wonder if this is Seoul at all. This restaurant boasts that its stew is made without MSG or ot...

BONERS: The Good Thief. My rating: 5 of 5 stars. I loved this book so much that I may just have contracted my mother's bizarre fascination for books featuring orphans. (Oliver Twist just jumped up 200 places on my to-read list.) Megan Abbott once said that for stories to work they have to move and devastate. This did both to me in spades. Hannah Tinti is someone I'm keeping an eye out for, this was incredible. View all my reviews. My rating: 3 of 5 stars. View all my reviews. My rating: 4 of 5 stars.
Our Man in Malawi
Our Man in Malawi. Friday, 15 January 2010. Time to do the Rain Dance. Here the seasons are changing and becoming more volatile. I am not a scientist so will not claim to know how severe this is and whether indeed judging it over such a short period is a valid exercise but this year it is hitter and dryer than it is ‘meant to be’. Thankfully on the flip side Petrol and Diesel are back to normal so lets hope we get some rain and Malawi can build on its record of 4-5 strong growth years for the economy.
