History - Organ Piper Pizza

After the advent of sound films in 1927, theaters ceased using their pipe organs, many were thrown away, others were sold and removed by organ technicians. Our instrument was assembled from parts saved from such theaters. The basic mechanical components (the console, windchests, regulators, and tremulants) were built by Wurlitzer. The pipework represents that of several builders. Read more about our Wurlitzer Console.

The console is the control center of the organ, in theaters this was the only part of the organ that was actually visible to the audience. Our Wurlitzer console was built in 1929 for the Seneca Theatre in Buffalo, NY. It has had several homes since then, most recently the Avalon Theatre in Milwaukee. From there, pressure is fed into the windchests on which the pipes sit. Under each and every pipe, there is a small electro-magnet and a series of valves which are activated when the organist plays that note and stop combination. The picture below was taken under the windchests in our main chamber.
