Cider « Oh Good Ale

https://ohgoodale.wordpress.com/cider

Phil's beer blog. Mild, porter and stout. This is the good stuff. A pale colour and one of those flavours that just keep on developing, like a good white wine. Sweet, flowery, sharp and beautifully balanced: doesn’t strip your teeth with acid, doesn’t dry your tongue with apple-peel bitterness, and doesn’t particularly taste of apples. Presumably Butford’s dry. Still, clear and slightly sweet; one of the more flowery, delicate ciders. Very drinkable, although it’s 7.4%. It didn’t occur to me while ...

Bottled beers « Oh Good Ale

https://ohgoodale.wordpress.com/bottled-beers

Phil's beer blog. Mild, porter and stout. Oh my Dark, fruity, malty and strong (5.2%). A beautiful beer. (The 6% Victory Ale is also worth looking out for.). A big dark warm fruity ale, with one of those big complex flavours you get in the dark Trappist/’abbey’ beers – cut short in this case by a big bitter finish. I don’t like to rave about beers that are available from your friendly local supermarket, but this is the good stuff. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. Mild, porter and stout.

Something silly « Oh Good Ale

https://ohgoodale.wordpress.com/2015/07/22/something-silly

Phil's beer blog. Mild, porter and stout. Commented the other day on the burgeoning of ‘craft’ beers with silly a.b.v.s, arguing that this is a recent phenomenon and that it goes along with a different way of drinking beer. A session of thirds at 10.5% would be a very different experience from a session of pints at 3.5% – more like a wine- or whisky-tasting evening, less like a session down the pub. Winter Warmer, Theakston’s. But there’s a big difference between Summer Lightning at 5.5%, or Yo...Winter ...

The question answered « Oh Good Ale

https://ohgoodale.wordpress.com/2015/06/16/the-question-answered

Phil's beer blog. Mild, porter and stout. Here are a couple of recent comments from Boak and Bailey’s blog. Both from readers based in the US:. A North American observer will be struck by what seem uniformly low ABV in the blackboard menu [which advertised beers ranging from 3.6% to 4%]. Curious if you ran into any beers of 5% or more. And here’s a handy ready-reckoner. (Wot no ‘insert table’ widget? HTML view here I come. This may take some time…). That’s what you do. Then again, on the basis of a twelve.

Spoonage « Oh Good Ale

https://ohgoodale.wordpress.com/2015/07/01/spoonage

Phil's beer blog. Mild, porter and stout. A wet weekend ». First of July, and we’re into another Spoons Token Quarter – which means that I’m no longer burdened, as I have been for the last few weeks, with the question. Many have I still got left? Anyway, I’ve spent more time in JDW’s over the last couple of weeks than I usually do, and I’ve accumulated a few tasting notes and other comments. So here goes. So I went to. The ominously named Potter’s Field. Off) By the Horns. London Porter, on the other han...

StringersBeer: 01/01/2015 - 02/01/2015

http://stringersbeer.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Saturday, January 10, 2015. What is (not "was") the difference between a stout and a porter? Roast barley, earlier. A while ago the mighty zythophile was able to clarify. Historically, to say roast barley is a differentiator between porter and stout is wrong. Of course, "historically" there's a great deal of truth in that. Naturally, it depends what you mean by "historically", but we'll let that stand. But what about non-historically? Or, as we might say, " now. Let's have a quick look. Rather than the t...

StringersBeer: 03/01/2014 - 04/01/2014

http://stringersbeer.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html

Tuesday, March 18, 2014. This "new" thing they call "craft". It just occurred to me, how much of the problem some people seem to have with the c-word may be down, not to over-use. And there has been of late), but rather to lack. Of familiarity. I spotted a knowledgeable beer blogger apparently expressing surprise. At the term "craft butcher". This is a long established usage; I mean there's even a magazine. Did we forget craft potters, craft furniture makers, etc? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Nautical vie...

Tuesday, February 11, 2014. Mash efficiency, etc, according to the Professor. We recently came across a piece by blogging home/craft brewer (and, we're sure, diamond geezer) broadfordbrewer. Reading an account of a yummy sounding raspberry wheat brew, we were a bit confused by some of the calculations employed in estimating efficiencies. So, as we usually do when confused (and we usually are), we asked the Professor for help. Degrees = (SG x 1000) - 1000. ºPlato = degrees / 4 [approx]. Expressed in diffe...

Tandleman's Beer Blog: Do We Like That One?

http://tandlemanbeerblog.blogspot.com/2015/07/do-we-like-that-one.html

Tandleman's Random and Particular Thoughts on Beer. Monday, 27 July 2015. Do We Like That One? I'm not a drinker of own brand beers really. I kind of think they are likely to be not very good with one or two exceptions. These exceptions are usually where a very good brewery has been commissioned to produce a particular kind of beer as part of a range. But what about those low end "cooking lagers" which aren't brands, but are set up to compete with "brands"? First up was Galahad Lager. Gives every impress...

http://tandlemanbeerblog.blogspot.com/2015/06/bass-in-sun.html

Tandleman's Random and Particular Thoughts on Beer. Monday, 15 June 2015. Bass in the Sun. You don't encounter Draught Bass that often these days in my experience. I know of a couple of places where it is sold, but I wouldn't go there just to seek the beer out as such. It wasn't always so. I used to make many a pilgrimage to the White Star. On a gorgeous summer's day last week, I was meeting a friend in Helensburgh, a town I know well from my youth in the West of Scotland. The Commodore Hotel. Draught Ba...

http://boakandbailey.com/2014/03/post-craft-world

Boak and Bailey's Beer Blog. Beer blogging since 2007, covering real ale, craft beer, pubs and British beer history. The Post Craft World. It is inevitable that, by the time a trend goes ‘mainstream’, those who first championed it will be moving on. And so it is with ‘craft beer’. 2014 is set to be the year of craft beer, with the term ‘ craft ales. So of course the cognoscenti, after some years of grumbling, have begun to reject the phrase outright. Mdash; Yeastie Boys (@yeastieboys) November 6, 2013.

Tandleman's Beer Blog: Fight

http://tandlemanbeerblog.blogspot.com/2015/05/fight.html

Tandleman's Random and Particular Thoughts on Beer. Tuesday, 19 May 2015. We are always being told by the anti drink lobby of "alcohol fuelled violence", but I have remarked here and in comments hither and thither that I can't remember the last time I saw a fight in a pub. Well I can now. Sort of. On my usual Wednesday out at the Regal Moon. An unusual incident I think you'll agree. I'm still guessing though that it will be a long time before I "see" a fight in a pub again. 19 May 2015 at 10:44. This blo...

Tandleman's Beer Blog: Another Thing the Pub is Best For

http://tandlemanbeerblog.blogspot.com/2015/07/another-thing-pub-is-best-for.html

Tandleman's Random and Particular Thoughts on Beer. Wednesday, 29 July 2015. Another Thing the Pub is Best For. One of our Sunday table from the Tandle Hill Tavern has died. We knew it was coming and so did he. Yesterday after his funeral we met, not at the Tavern, but at the nearby Ship, thus allowing the landlord of the THT to join us to see the lad off in a style he'd have liked. We had a piss up. Sounds like the perfect send off for a pub man. 29 July 2015 at 22:46. 30 July 2015 at 08:57. Nautical vi...
