The first undergraduate rocket powered by a 3D printed engine. Photos from the Launch. The Vulcan-1 rocket was designed by the SEDS UCSD team in an attempt to be the first student team in the world to successfully fly and recover a rocket powered by a 3D printed engine. On May 21st, 2016, SEDS UCSD became the first undergraduate organization in the world to succesfully launch a rocket powered by a 3D printed engine. Vulcan-1 was launched in the Mojave Desert, at the Friends of Amateur Rocketry site.

Tri-D 3D Printed Engine - SEDS UCSD

Tri-D 3D Printed Engine. The first engine designed by SEDS UCSD. Tri-D is the first engine designd by SEDS at UCSD. It is the first 3D printed rocket engine by a student organization. Tri-D was developed with the help of NASA's Marshall Flight Center and printed with by GPI Prototype and Manufacturing Services. It was meticulously designed to prevent overheating by burning fuel away from the walls, utilizing a regenerative cooling jacket, and maintaining layer of relatively cool gases.
