Farm and prairie notes and observations. Archive for September, 2016. Dying with New England Asters. On September 27, 2016 Leave a Comment. The girls and their friends helped me pick a big bag of New England Asters on the prairie. I hadn’t seen New England asters on any dye lists, but thought the bright purple flowers might yield a purple dye. I forgot to weigh the flowers before setting them to boil. The dye bath looked kind of greenish. I was really surprised by the results. Read Full Post ». The sumac...

Farm and prairie notes and observations. Laquo; Winter is here. December 5, 2013 by Ann. Today was cold. Cold and clear. Bright blue sky, sparkling snow, and cold enough to take your breath away. The very cold weather causes tiny ice crystals or ice dust to form in the air and we get “ sundogs. 8221; The ring of light around the sun was visible most of the day. Here is another photo. Farm and prairie notes and observations. Dying with New England Asters. Sumac Berry Dye – Natural Dye Experiment #1. September 12, 2016 by Ann. Ok – so this will be my second try. The first was such a dismal failure, I don’t want to even mention it. I used far too little dye stuff and cotton yarn. It changed from white to slightly less white. I used goldenrod flowers and bedstraw root. I didn’t want to use much root, as that obviously kills the plant. Left both to cool overnight. UPDATE – The golde...

Farm and prairie notes and observations. Laquo; Frosty windows. December 25, 2013 by Ann. Christmas Eve. Midnight. I just walked home from the candle light church service in the 3 inches of new, powdery snow that fell this afternoon. I was one of the last to leave the church as Christmas Eve is such a wonderful chance to visit with old friends who are home for the holiday. Oh Holy Night – Oh Night Divine. Farm and prairie notes and observations. December 4, 2013 by Ann. Today we woke to a half inch coating of light, powdery snow, and are expecting much more. December 2, 2013 by Ann. We woke up to a dusting of snow on the ground this morning. Minnesota mornings are dark this time of year, and heavy clouds and snowflakes made the morning seem even more gray. But the white dusting on the ground is so welcome and cheerful in December. In honor of the occasion, my youngest and I built a tiny snowman. So today ...

Farm and prairie notes and observations. Laquo; Oh Holy Night. April 17, 2015 by Ann. Today is a beautiful day. A Spring day. The kind of day that makes you happy to live in Minnesota. The lawns are slowly turning green as the new grass shoots shove aside the dead, brown grass and leaves that have suffocated under the snow all winter. Several of my conscientious neighbors have been raking away the dead vegetation from last fall in an attempt to encourage their lawns to hurry up and grow. Create a free we...

Farm and prairie notes and observations. I’m just a simple prairie girl in West Central Minnesota making natural observations to share with a virtual world. On July 1, 2011 at 12:39 pm. Your avatar image looks like it might be a species of Clematis. If that’s correct, can you identify the species? Here in central Texas, I have fun photographing Clematis drummondii.
