Missionary Musings

Thoughts, ideas, and comments on life from two missionaries in Africa. Friday, November 21, 2014. Benefits of being a Mazungo. I guess being a “Mazungo” (foreigner) has its perks. Yes, I stick out like a sore thumb. Yes, that sometimes means that merchants try to rip me off. But this week I had two encounters that made me glad I stand out. I later asked his name, so I’ll use it here. Everything good with you? Everything’s good. And you? Do you work for a business here? Is that the one with Pastor Mario?

Missionary Musings: Just like a waving flag…

http://www.missionary-musings.blogspot.com/2010/09/just-like-waving-flag.html

Thoughts, ideas, and comments on life from two missionaries in Africa. Tuesday, September 7, 2010. Just like a waving flag…. This song was written by an artist from Somalia, and it does such a poignant job of expressing the sad histories of almost all African nations: http:/ www.youtube.com/watch? When I get older, they'll call me freedom. Just like a Waving Flag. When I get older, I will be stronger,. They'll call me freedom, just like a Waving Flag,. And then it goes back (3X). So we patiently wait, fo...

Missionary Musings: May 2009

Thoughts, ideas, and comments on life from two missionaries in Africa. Sunday, May 3, 2009. Hope, Faith, and Favor. Usually what keeps me going is having a number of moments where I stop and say, "Wow,. Is why I am here! Lately, however, I've been having a lot more moments where I stop and ask, "Wait, why. Therefore I took a day off to hide, fast, pray, and really seek God's face. Did He really call me here, to this place, to do this work? Did I miss Him on His calling for my life? The faithful love of t...

Missionary Musings: Every Word

http://www.missionary-musings.blogspot.com/2010/06/every-word.html

Thoughts, ideas, and comments on life from two missionaries in Africa. Monday, June 28, 2010. So apparently I can write poetry in my sleep. Even in my sleep last night I was haunted by some of the stories described in the book, the ruthlessness of the attacks. In my dream I was writing a poem about how I felt, and when I woke up I could remember most of it. Here it is. As I looked out. I started to sing. It was a song I had never heard before. Even though it had many verses. It was a sad song.

Missionary Musings: August 2010

http://www.missionary-musings.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html

Thoughts, ideas, and comments on life from two missionaries in Africa. Sunday, August 15, 2010. If You came back today. Would You find me faithful with all that You gave me to do? How did I live day to day? Did the talents You gave me bring glory to You? Did I learn how to love the unlovely? Did I stop to help a stranger in need? Did I put others first, lay down my pride? Did I give myself completely? I want to be found faithful. I want to hear You say, "My servant, well done". I want to be found faithful.

Missionary Musings: October 2010

http://www.missionary-musings.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html

Thoughts, ideas, and comments on life from two missionaries in Africa. Saturday, October 23, 2010. Some stories just need to be told. Last year we struck up a friendship with one of the Bible school teachers, Abel. He spoke English, so that was quite helpful in our first months of struggling to master Portuguese. I know there aren’t supposed to be tears in heaven, but I think I’ll have some in my eyes when I give her a hug when I get to see her there. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Jon and Carla's Main Site.

The Chronicles of Janie: Tagged! (I'm It).

http://theblogofjanie.blogspot.com/2015/07/i-just-responded-to-two-blogging-tags.html

The Chronicles of Janie. Thoughts, prayers, projects and pictures; the chronicle of one simple life from Missouri to Mozambique and the places between. Wednesday, July 22, 2015. I just responded to two blogging tags over on The Aspiring Bard, but then I got tagged again by Jessica. And, well, I couldn't just ignore her. Anyway, her questions were genuinely interesting and I had fun answering. And just 'cause I can, here's a moonrise over my zona. 2 What's one thing you've learned recently? One favorite i...

Day-to-Day Life in Africa: Family Update--Kyran's Birthday!

http://life-in-moz.blogspot.com/2015/03/family-update-kyrans-birthday.html

Day-to-Day Life in Africa. A family's stories of life in the third world. Tuesday, March 3, 2015. Family Update- Kyran's Birthday! We had a great time with Kyran's birthday party! This is the "rainy season" here in Mozambique, which means we've been getting rain about 4 days per week for the last couple months. Kyran really wanted to go to the beach for his birthday, so I prayed it wouldn't rain on the 28th and that was answered! I think our time in Malta last year influenced his request for a boat cake!

Day-to-Day Life in Africa. A family's stories of life in the third world. Tuesday, March 31, 2015. Renovations and a Road Trip! Whew, it's been a busy month. Before we get started with the news, here's the super-cute Thoughtful Apple Fairy. So the people who owned all the furniture in our house came and took it all away, and we've slowly been replacing it all. In the meantime it's really barren! And here's Jariel "helping" me scrape a closet door:. Jariel thrilled to be allowed to help paint:. There's a ...

Day-to-Day Life in Africa: All in a Day’s Work

http://life-in-moz.blogspot.com/2009/03/all-in-days-work.html

Day-to-Day Life in Africa. A family's stories of life in the third world. Friday, March 27, 2009. All in a Day’s Work. Life has become considerably more hectic since the changes made. To give you a small idea of how things are now, I'll just describe yesterday. Augustino (one of the older kids) asked if he could have his MP3 player back that he had given me the day before to charge, though it took me a minute to understand what "empetres" meant: in Portuguese the letters Em Pe and the number Tres. Doming...

The Missionary-ish Tales of Reagan Taylor

Monday, June 1, 2015. I have been in Thai language school for 3 months now. Which pretty much means I can tell you my name, "happy birthday," that my air conditioner is broken, it's really hot outside, and I want to order fried rice. Other than a couple semesters of Spanish in high school and college, I've never really. Studied another language before. Like the I-actually-want-to-speak-this-in-life. Kind, not the I-just-want-to-pass-this-test. I mean, that's fair. The same thing happened when we listened...
