guatemala feliz

Well, it´s beautiful, anyway. Monday, November 30, 2009. On October 22, I returned to Guatemala after leaving the service of the Peace Corps to finish up two projects. First, I returned to my village to distribute thirty-seven portraits to students of the sixth grade class there. The village decorated and prepared a party for me. I felt appreciated and welcomed, something I did not always feel while I lived there. The students received their portraits with great joy, and I felt good about the whole thing.

Well, it´s beautiful, anyway. Tuesday, May 26, 2009. Love and mucus sucker balls. Well, Project 1 has finally been accomplished.  Today I gave out the midwife kits to 11 local midwives.  They were very excited and receptive to get stethescopes, mucus sucker balls, gauze, gloves, a nylon sheet, baby wash, umbilical cutters, umbilical twine, and more.  Many thanks to all of you who helped. Learning to use the stethoscopes. Saying "thank you.". Monday, May 25, 2009. Friday, May 22, 2009. So, those are the l...

Well, it´s beautiful, anyway. Saturday, December 13, 2008. Where the magic happens. The Peace Corps shelves. The stove that was so much trouble to get. Some fabulous freedom toast cooked on my gas stove. Thursday, December 11, 2008. Monday I returned home from a trip to Huehue to find my door ajar. Now, I was certain I had locked it on the way out. I went to ask my neighbor, "Who went in my room? Umwell.if you do that again, could you close the door afterward? Can I come in? I let her in. She seemed ...

Well, it´s beautiful, anyway. Saturday, April 25, 2009. No where to run. Today I gave a difficult charla on a very delicate subject—la violencia intrafamiliar, or domestic violence.  . I was speaking to the local midwives.  . What I was hoping to do more than anything was to just start a conversation about a problem that thrives in secrecy.  . First I told them a story of a fictional couple named Laura and Luis.  . She finally decided to make a plan.  . 8220;Nothing,” they all said.  . But then the husba...

I’ve been in my site for just over a month now, and every day has its ups and downs. 8221; has never been screamed at you by 200 school children, you haven’t lived. The hardest thing right now is definitely the unabated loneliness. My town is really reserved, and I don’t really have any friends. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). I wrote it. Now who will read it? Today’s the Day! November 24, 2008 · 1:52 pm. Waiting for Water: Excerpts. Since the end of the semester nears, I’ve decided it’s time to include some of the story. This is the intro and the conclusion. I wrote the beginning on a hammock in Guatemala and the end on the plane home, while looking at the clouds. Cranking and whining, the machine delves deeper, looking for water. Sitting on the highest hill in El Modelo, the contraption has drilled 60 feet so far. She looks ...
