I'm a Ph.D student at RMIT in Melbourne studying the effectiveness of local government behaviour change programs responding to climate change. This stage consists of two parts. The first is a scan of local government programs across Australia. This includes both those programs that attempt to directly educate their target population about climate change, and those that promote actions which result in emissions reductions (such as solar bulk buys), even though they may not use climate change as a primary motivation. While the majority of the literature review is complete, there will be ongoing work through the life of the research project to refine the initial findings. The literature review examined current behavioural theories that have been applied through community engagement approaches as well as highlighting three alternative approaches, which show promise.
