My Virtual Maryland Garden: Phlox 'Bright Eyes'

http://mcwort.blogspot.com/2015/06/phlox-bright-eyes.html

My Virtual Maryland Garden. A blog exploring the pleasures of gardening in Montgomery County, Maryland, USA. Monday, June 29, 2015. A century ago, summer blooming phlox were widely regarded as the most important perennials for the summer garden. Those who still grow them in quantity probably feel that way about them even now. Pre-WWI books and trade lists enumerate dozens of varieties; compare that to the half-dozen or so widely marketed today. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile.

http://mcwort.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

My Virtual Maryland Garden. A blog exploring the pleasures of gardening in Montgomery County, Maryland, USA. Tuesday, January 27, 2015. This is the upright form of the conifer Cephalotaxus harringtonia. Sold as C. harringtonia. It’s a plum yew, a yew relative. Because this fastigiate form has its foliage in whorls, it does not really look like the typical wild forms of C. harringtonia. 8221; That’s the kind of visitor I like! Monday, January 5, 2015. This handsome plant was grown as a houseplant long bef...

This is the plant, or one of the plants, which is offered as Lycoris aurea. In the mass distribution catalogs. It's one of the less cold hardy species of the genus Lycoris. the back quarter acre: Boston Strong (and small and slow)

http://thebackquarteracre.blogspot.com/2015/04/boston-strong-and-small-and-slow.html

The back quarter acre. Sunday, April 19, 2015. Boston Strong (and small and slow). According to yesterday's news broadcast, this year's harsh winter has stalled us several weeks' behind our usual seasonal spring schedule. So the blue and yellow markings of these little Iris reticulata "Katherine Hodgkin" typically don't unfurl in synchrony with the colorful celebration of the Boston Marathon. the back quarter acre: October 2013

http://thebackquarteracre.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html

The back quarter acre. Tuesday, October 08, 2013. In the meantime, peonies and phlox have mildewed, basil has bolted, and many spent blossoms yearn for deadheading. While it really doesn't matter whether you tend your garden during the growing season- as long as you can tolerate the disheveled and raggedy results- when it comes harvest time, paying no attention produces big problems. the back quarter acre: Garden goal roll, 2015

http://thebackquarteracre.blogspot.com/2015/04/garden-goal-roll-2015.html

The back quarter acre. Monday, April 20, 2015. Garden goal roll, 2015. It's spring now, so all things horticultural are possible. Cue the cock-eyed optimist: I'm preparing my annual garden goal roll: what needs to be done, when it should be done, and where it's all happening. Dust peonies with copper fungicide to limit blight. Done 4/19/2015. Top-dress spring-flowering bulbs with 3-5-3 when the leaf-tips emerge. Except for small front walk bed, done 4/19/2015. Start renovation of back property line bed.

The back quarter acre. Tuesday, April 28, 2015. Ive got sunshine on a cloudy day. Even on an overcast, raw, why-are-we-still-wearing-mittens kind of day, these patches of yellow make their own sunny weather. the back quarter acre: Bookending visits to a sunken surprise

http://thebackquarteracre.blogspot.com/2012/04/bookending-visits-to-sunken-surprise.html

The back quarter acre. Tuesday, April 10, 2012. Bookending visits to a sunken surprise. Last fall, I wrote about the happy discovery of a sunken garden. On the grounds of the Radcliffe Institute. Back then, the blooming season was creeping to a close, so I promised myself to pay another visit when the seasons had turned. Once again, quite by chance, I found myself in the neighborhood earlier this week and decided to check in. Which were just winding up their bloom season nearby. Tuesday, April 10, 2012.

The back quarter acre. Monday, November 18, 2013. Jane Kenyon, the poeticus' mood, and several hundred daffodils. In her essay, "The Phantom Pruner," poet and fellow New England gardener, Jane Kenyon, uses the metaphor of a sun-filled garden to express her desire for emotional luminosity and openness:. I am planning to seek my bliss indoors, too, with a slew of paperwhites, hyacinths, and amaryllises. 50 Narcissus "Yellow Cheerfulness" (Brent and Becky's Bulbs). 5 Narcissus poeticus (Old House Gardens).

the back quarter acre: May 2014

http://thebackquarteracre.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html

The back quarter acre. Monday, May 19, 2014. I have boundary issues. Not as in a lack of any boundaries- quite the opposite. I like boundaries. I like clearly marked property. I like name tags, monogrammed stationary, and signet rings. I like knowing what belongs to me and what doesn't. Don't even think about asking me to share my dessert. It's not going to happen. Curving border along front walk. And, so, ugly patches of lawn are gobbled up. In other words, not only will I refuse to share my dessert...

the back quarter acre: August 2014

http://thebackquarteracre.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

The back quarter acre. Monday, August 25, 2014. Sweet end of summer. Cool temperatures this past week have stirred up conversations about an early fall. The plant world, too, seems to be pushing the seasons forward. The end of summer is sweetened by the sight and scent of the appropriately named Summer Sweet. Even though they are hardy to Zone 3, I don't see Summer Sweet growing in gardens around here. Local gardeners may be put off by the late leafing out. Monday, August 25, 2014. Friday, August 08, 2014.

Vermeer and Van Leeuwenhoek: best buds pranking and pulling a fast one? Had an article on two breeds of dog now newly recognized by the American Kennel Club: one is the nederlandse kooikerhondje, a brown and white spaniel which looks just like the dogs in the mid-seventeenth century paintings.
