Viajera del mundo: June 2012
http://ulland-joyfamily.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html
Saturday, June 23, 2012. Santa Fe, Argentina. I arrived in Santa Fe, Argentina, to find my friend Enrique Butti waiting for me at the bus station. What a wonderful welcome back to Santa Fe! While Enrique was at work on Thursday (he works at the newspaper El Litoral. As an editor), I spent time perusing Enrique’s home library. Now, I love my wall of books at home, but I would trade it for Enrique’s any day! In the afternoon, I took a walk along the laguna. During the evening, I went to a poetry recital th...

Viajera del mundo: New books and boots!
http://ulland-joyfamily.blogspot.com/2012/06/new-books-and-boots.html
Wednesday, June 20, 2012. New books and boots! Yesterday I met with author Gloria Pampillo—she’s a new contact that Irma introduced me to. We talked over lunch for nearly 3 hours! Then, I went to El Ateneo on Santa Fe—I love that bookstore! I’ve actually bought more books in the past and spent less money on the same number. The other day I spent over $30 on a paperback book! Hopefully, my students think so, too. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). And if I Seem a Little Strange. Santa Fe, Argentina.

Viajera del mundo: Biblioteca Nacional
http://ulland-joyfamily.blogspot.com/2012/06/biblioteca-nacional.html
Tuesday, June 19, 2012. I’m a different person now. Yesterday afternoon I met up with Lupe and we had lunch again together—no bife de chorizo. This time, we were still too full from the day before! On the first floor there was a very complete display of newspapers, magazines and books all commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Guerra de Malvinas. I’m pretty sure that the account of the Malvinas in the U.S. was significantly different than that in Argentina! Women Writers—what can I say? Whats new to r...

Viajera del mundo: March 2011
http://ulland-joyfamily.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html
Tuesday, March 22, 2011. PS You may have noticed that these last posts were posted after my return. I just got around to uploading my typed notes from the trip. Well, today is our last day in Istanbul and we’re going to another university… More later. So, here’s what I learned today…. After having visited Israel and the West Bank, it was interesting and helpful to get another perspective on the Middle East from someone on the outside, but not so far away as the United States is. Viajera del mundo: A bit about the economic situation
http://ulland-joyfamily.blogspot.com/2012/06/bit-about-economic-situation.html
Sunday, June 17, 2012. A bit about the economic situation. I don’t study politics or economics, but even I can tell the difference in the economic situation. Even on the first day I noticed that prices were up—I actually had to cut back on what I purchased at the grocery story because I didn’t have enough cash with me at the time! There’s also a lot of uncertainty right now because just in the last few days the President, Cristina Fernández, announced a plan to pesificar. And if I Seem a Little Strange.

Viajera del mundo: Recoleta Cemetery
http://ulland-joyfamily.blogspot.com/2012/06/recoleta-cemetery.html
Sunday, June 17, 2012. For my Latin American Women Writers class this fall and I want to be able to show my students what Recoleta looks like. I found Evita’s tomb. She’s not necessarily the most famous person buried in the cemetery, but she’s probably the most controversial. I also went to the movie Elefante Blanco. Starring Ricardo Darín (a well-known actor here in Argentina), Jérémie Renier and Martina Gusmán. The movie was about life in the villas miserias. His murder has never been solved.

Viajera del mundo: In Buenos Aires!
http://ulland-joyfamily.blogspot.com/2012/06/in-buenos-aires.html
Thursday, June 14, 2012. I’m in Buenos Aires for the next two weeks and the trip has started off well. I arrived on Tuesday morning at 6:30 am! After settling in on Tuesday, I went out to look for food. I found some small markets and got some essentials, including some tea. I’ve gotten in the habit of drinking tea with breakfast. Well, I found a “blend intenso”. Holy cow! After half a cup my heart starts to palpitate because of so much caffeine. It’s definitely intense! With dulce de leche. Today, I have...
