The Highlight | South Africadventures

https://mattkertman.wordpress.com/2012/07/31/the-highlight

Be it how it will, do right now. The highlight of my Peace Corps service arrived the 23. Of last month, when my counterpart and I took all 26 young men from Siyakhula Boys Club to Johannesburg on an educational field trip for the end of term break. They raised roughly half the cost of transport themselves, the club paid for some of the remaining cost, and overly generous donations from a precious few friends and family in America provided the rest. Thank you! So, what happened? It was filed under Serving.

Be it how it will, do right now. Why I’m an Ally. The below piece, with its accompanying introduction, ran recently in the Post newsletter’s “Get Bent” column, a dedicated space in each month’s issue reserved specifically for issues related to LGBTQ volunteers serving in SA. Hope you enjoy. Hello SA PCVs,. Why I’m an Ally. How one PCV got tired of waiting for justice and became an ally. By Matt Kertman (SA22). It feels like I’m always waiting. I wait to feel like I’ve made a difference. It’s difficult to...

Et in Arcadia Ego | South Africadventures

Be it how it will, do right now. Et in Arcadia Ego. You know, Nhlanhla, in our culture, rain is a blessing. And these rains, they’re wonderful, you know, because there’s no thunder, no violence: they stay for days, he says, personifying the weather. Yes, yes, it is a blessing from God, and a blessing on you and your journey. God is saying thank you. Or, perhaps, because no gesture or speech can possibly carry enough gravitas, does one simply shake hands and take care to shut the door behind them? I wrote...

Why We Don’t Need Facebook | South Africadventures

https://mattkertman.wordpress.com/2013/07/08/why-we-dont-need-facebook

Be it how it will, do right now. Why We Don’t Need Facebook. I met an Irishman named Peter once. It was in a village called Nkhotakota, on the shore of Lake Malawi, where he was volunteering as part of a youth development program. My brother and I had arrived late in the day and, it turned out, had the better part of a night to pass until the 64-year-old motor ship. After the Boston Marathon bombing last April, during the firefight in Watertown, residents recorded footage on their smart phones, uploaded ...

An African Honeymoon: The Quirks of Our Little Home

http://anafricanhoneymoon.blogspot.com/2011/01/quirks-of-our-little-home.html

Saturday, January 22, 2011. The Quirks of Our Little Home. For the purpose of posterity – so as to never forget those little details that are so often misplaced in memories of moving and settling and living and moving again – I wanted to offer up a post on some of the more interesting aspects of this little, two-room place we call home here in Africa. It begins as such…. Our answer: that would just be far too convenient and, afterall, this is Africa. In our quirky, little home. Find Jess on Facebook.

An African Honeymoon: ‘Goodbye 2010 and Hello 2011’ or as it might be more aptly titled, ‘The Times They Are a Changin’

http://anafricanhoneymoon.blogspot.com/2011/01/goodbye-2010-and-hello-2011-or-as-it.html

Saturday, January 15, 2011. 8216;Goodbye 2010 and Hello 2011’ or as it might be more aptly titled, ‘The Times They Are a Changin’. First and foremost,. Happy New Year to everyone! Sorry we’re a little-more-than belated on the New Year wishing, but we’ve been keeping very busy (and very entertained) on the road with fellow PCVs! And have been knee-deep in beginning-of-the-year work upon our return to Thembalethu! So where to begin…. I also know that she can and will make it through in time! And though Ada...

An African Honeymoon: RWO: Gangsters Holding Hands

http://anafricanhoneymoon.blogspot.com/2011/01/rwo-gangsters-holding-hands.html

Friday, January 21, 2011. RWO: Gangsters Holding Hands. Speaking of gangsters… a young, gang-ish, boy here is called (as mentioned above) a ‘Tstotsi’. They are easily recognizable by their slightly too-nice and well-fitted clothing and the trademark, floppy, fisherman hat. Just like they see on TV and in movies, they walk with a swagger, head tilted to the side, shouting in low, abrupt bursts, their familiar slang – Eitha! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). An African Honeymoon: RWO: Pay Up, Big Boy!

http://anafricanhoneymoon.blogspot.com/2011/01/rwo-pay-up-big-boy.html

Thursday, January 20, 2011. RWO: Pay Up, Big Boy! When a woman is to be married in South Africa, the future groom’s family pays “Labola”, a gift to unite the two families. Labola usually consists of 10 cows, each representing a virtue of the future bride (and 11 cows if the future bride is still a virgin)! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). http://anafricanhoneymoon.blogspot.com/2011/01/and-so-it-was-that-schmutz-and-bobos.html

Thursday, January 27, 2011. And So it Was, that Schmutz and Bobo’s Great Adventure Came to an End…. So Jess and I have some big news, and I mean ‘Rhinoceros big’. We have decided to end our service with Peace Corps and come home. I know that this news probably comes as a shock to most of you and so I wanted to write this post to shed some light on this decision and how we came to make it. The discussion of what is best for us in terms of our future with Peace Corps had been ongoing for the last several m...

An African Honeymoon: Some of Our Conversations with South Africans

http://anafricanhoneymoon.blogspot.com/2011/01/some-of-our-conversations-with-south.html

Monday, January 24, 2011. Some of Our Conversations with South Africans. A Conversation with Mama Christine and Johannas:. South Africans tend to be very honest about their observations of others. In fact, it is not uncommon at all for our reasonably fit and petite, female volunteers to be told by a woman three-times they’re girth that they are “looking quite fat” on their first day back to work after vacation! Our return conversation went something like as follows…. Upon seeing Adam first]: Jabu! Starti...

An African Honeymoon: Tasting Notes

http://anafricanhoneymoon.blogspot.com/2011/01/tasting-notes.html

Monday, January 17, 2011. All that night and into the next morning I was worried. I was worried that we had peaked too soon. I mean, L’Avenir was one of the most highly recommended wineries in all of our literature, what if we had tasted the best first? So even if the price doubles with import taxes that’s still only $20 - $30, and believe me, these wines drink far better than that. I know I will be paying a lot more attention to South African wines both here and when we come home. Find Jess on Facebook.

An African Honeymoon: January 2011

http://anafricanhoneymoon.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html

Saturday, January 29, 2011. So, to all our friends still in South Africa, and to our future selves, I give you my entirely haphazard and potentially nonsensical listing of the ‘small stuff’…. African Time. Baby cows, baby donkeys, baby goats… baby everythings! Salani kahle everyone… we’ll see you on the other side. Thursday, January 27, 2011. And So it Was, that Schmutz and Bobo’s Great Adventure Came to an End…. The discussion of what is best for us in terms of our future with Peace Corps had been ongoi...
