BirdingNH: March 2009
http://docsuzymartin.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html
Natural history stories from New Hampshire. Tuesday, March 24, 2009. Suzy Martin, Master Gardener, Tree Steward. The Toad arrived unexpectedly in early February during some of our heaviest snows this winter. He appeared to not be affected by the cold despite the old wives' tale, the robin is the first sign of spring and it certainly was not spring. First sign of spring, ha! Our first encounter, as I was standing in the kitchen with our granddaughter who said, "A robin! Look at the robin, Mimi! The bluebi...

Natural history stories from New Hampshire. Thursday, July 23, 2009. Every year I enter the Lilac Photo Contest here in New Hampshire, thinking me, a rank amateur, is going to win over all of the other rank amateurs because, me again, is so good. My angles, my composition, my colors oh, I could write a sonnet about my photos. Then, I open the website and saw. the winners. oh, well back to the camera and it's automatic settings! But here are some of my entries. Love the lilac with bee! Follow me on Twitter.

BirdingNH: NUTS to YOU!!
http://docsuzymartin.blogspot.com/2009/08/nuts-to-you.html
Natural history stories from New Hampshire. Friday, August 14, 2009. My name is the Widow Hannah, I am 98 years old, and I was born and raised in Hampstead, NH! In 1822, grey squirrels were everywhere as they are now. Eating all of the acorns, getting into houses, and in general as much of a nuisance, as they are now. Usually their nests are in the notches of trees made of large bundles of leaves, branches, and fur and several squirrels may share their nest with their friends. It was decided at one meeti...
BirdingNH: Where do they go Mimi?
http://docsuzymartin.blogspot.com/2009/12/where-do-they-go-mimi.html
Natural history stories from New Hampshire. Tuesday, December 29, 2009. Where do they go Mimi? Our granddaughter was over last week and asked me a great question, she knew worms or bugs live in the ground during the summer but wanted to know where they go in the winter especially as it is so cold now. Being the retired but never quitting, biology teacher I am, I couldn't let this teachable moment go by. But what about real worms, earthworms, she asked, where do they go when it gets so cold? Frogs like to...

Natural history stories from New Hampshire. Saturday, May 23, 2009. Condo Living ain't so bad. My bluebirds are coaxing the five babies out of the box so I decided it was time to move inside and do some writing. This arrangement was not preplanned. If you had asked me 7 or more years ago, condo life was not where I would expect to be. no, sir, give me that good ole countryside. Today, I was dived bombed by a catbird, the bluebirds are trying to coax out the babies from the birdbox in my garden, I have a ...

Natural history stories from New Hampshire. Saturday, January 2, 2010. From my observation window this morning I fed the bluebirds and the titmice their usual wade of live mealworms. On cue, the arrived to the over-turned saucer and dove in. I have seen bluebirds eat 20 live mealworms at one sitting. eaten live these must cause some kind of flutter in the bluebirds' tummy. BirdingNH: December 2008
http://docsuzymartin.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html
Natural history stories from New Hampshire. Wednesday, December 3, 2008. The Ice Crystals Cometh. THE ICE CRYSTALS COMETH. Remember those tiny, little, soft, crackling, snowflakes falling from the sky attaching to your eyelashes, mittens, and tongue during those snow days when we were growing up? Oh, how my friends and I loved to get up and out when the announcement came “NO SCHOOL! And remember, “No two snowflakes alike” from our science books in school? Growing up in the fifties and sixties and having ...

2017: A Year in Review. I played a bunch of video games in 2017. I even finished some of them. This is what I thought of those. JRPG, realtime action-y combat. Final Fantasy XV features a variety of product placements, and they all feel forced and out-of-place. Products include camping gear, instant noodles, a credit card, and a designer dress. It’s a weird experiment, and feels like the wrong genre or setting for advertising. Open World Action (with a touch of RPG). Horizon: Zero Dawn is a rare game in ...
