Knitting it all together: Good poetry, bad prose

http://knitnthink.blogspot.com/2014/10/good-poetry-bad-prose.html

Knitting it all together. Knitting, books and movies, etc. Friday, October 17, 2014. Good poetry, bad prose. Notice: knitting content will be returning to this knitting/books/film blog. After 8.5 years, I have completed the knitting project that has been my albatross. This sweater is why I haven't been in a yarn shop in, well, probably 8.5 years, until yesterday when I purchased the buttons to finish it off. And here it is:. The pattern is from a gorgeous, now out-of-print book, Poetry in Stitches. I gav...

Knitting it all together: 11/01/2014 - 12/01/2014

http://knitnthink.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Knitting it all together. Knitting, books and movies, etc. Sunday, November 02, 2014. I wanted to love J.K. Rowling's first post-Harry Potter novel, The Casual Vacancy. Indeed, the novel reads like the author has an axe to grind, but I'm sympathetic to this particular axe, which seems to be a desire to castigate those who heap scorn upon the poor from the safety of their comfortable homes. I know the species, and its members deserve every dig the famous author can send their way. Links to this post.

Knitting it all together. Knitting, books and movies, etc. Thursday, December 04, 2014. Reading, Writing and Arithmetic. November by the numbers:. I finished book 52 of my book-a-week-in-2014 reading challenge. I'm still reading and will probably count at least three more before the new year. The last was Me Before You by JoJo Moyes. A tear-jerker of a novel. It was one of 15 books to get a five-star rating from me this year. Of those, my favorite was a classic, Wilkie Collins' The Woman in White.

Knitting it all together: 10/01/2014 - 11/01/2014

http://knitnthink.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Knitting it all together. Knitting, books and movies, etc. Friday, October 31, 2014. Anyway, I managed to read four novels during the toppler week, and a couple of them were quite good. My very brief summaries follow. First up was a classic science fiction novel I've had on my reading list for many years, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Next was the most poignant and beautifully-written novel of the week, the Booker Prize-winning The God of Small Things. Links to this post. Friday, October 17, 2014.

Knitting it all together: The Name of the Rose

http://knitnthink.blogspot.com/2014/10/the-name-of-rose.html

Knitting it all together. Knitting, books and movies, etc. Monday, October 06, 2014. The Name of the Rose. I've been an admirer of Umberto Eco. Since reading his marvelous novel Foucault's Pendulum. In my mid-20s. For many years, I counted it among my top-five favorite books, although I was less enchanted when I re-read it a few years ago. I read 3 of Eco's subsequent 4 novels and a collection of essays, but none have matched the delight of my first experience of Foucault. This novel is full of allusions...

Traverse City Fitness Pals: My weighty story

http://tcfitnesspals.blogspot.com/p/blog-page.html

Traverse City Fitness Pals. Eating and exercising for personal and planetary health. Image courtesy of [image creator name] / FreeDigitalPhotos.net. I was teased as a child for being so skinny. I remember older relatives watching me eat copious helpings of ice cream directly from the carton, warning, "that'll catch up with you one day." They were right, but it didn't start catching up until I was in college. So in 30 years, I had packed on nearly 80 pounds, mostly in large chunks following major life cha...

Traverse City Fitness Pals. Eating and exercising for personal and planetary health. Image courtesy of [image creator name] / FreeDigitalPhotos.net. Tuesday, October 22, 2013. As some of you know, I've been fascinated with the Scandinavian approach to food ever since visiting the American Swedish Institute. In Minneapolis and its outstanding FIKA cafe. I wanted more, which back in Traverse City meant I would need to learn to make it myself. Or the offerings at the farmer's market. For about half of t...

Traverse City Fitness Pals. Eating and exercising for personal and planetary health. Image courtesy of [image creator name] / FreeDigitalPhotos.net. Monday, December 2, 2013. Thanksgiving weekend is over, and as we drag into this first Monday in December, many of us may be feeling a need for some corrective or restorative measures if we engaged in Thanksgiving excess. What's your favorite post-Thanksgiving restorative? 1 cup almond milk. 1 tsp matcha powder. 4 or 5 drops stevia. Berry, berry good. FOR TH...

From My Hearth: Extreme Cooking, part 2

http://from-my-hearth.blogspot.com/2015/05/extreme-cooking-part-2.html

Experiments in radical domesticity. Monday, May 4, 2015. Extreme Cooking, part 2. Today's post should have been day four on the theme of "sure, cooking is easy, but it doesn't have to be. The problem with extreme cooking is that it doesn't leave much time for blogging. Plus, the weather just turned lovely here in northern Michigan, and I've been wanting to take my cooking breaks outside. Finally I remembered my laptop can also go outside. Also, you'll see now why I'm such a bad food blogger. After fo...

From My Hearth: Lunch and a Movie

http://from-my-hearth.blogspot.com/2011/05/lunch-and-movie.html

Experiments in radical domesticity. Thursday, May 5, 2011. Lunch and a Movie. When I began home schooling my daughter Leah nearly two years ago, I had no plan and few ideas on how to guide her education. One day, desperately flailing about for an activity, I suggested we go to the morning movie at our beautifully-restored downtown cinema, the State Theater. Every Wednesday, the State shows a classic movie for 25 cents, the same price charged when it first opened as the Lyric in 1916. When I mentioned to ...

Experiments in radical domesticity. Wednesday, July 8, 2015. Berry, berry good. This is the time of which we dreamed during the long winter in northern Michigan. The beginning of summer and its gloriously fine weather also brings with it our short and delicious strawberry season, followed by cherries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries. I recommend gorging. Slice off the caps and any rotten parts. Dunk the berries in a bowl of cold water to rinse clean. Drain in a colander. This summer cake recipe.

Two Knits 'n a Style

Two Knits 'n a Style. Last Day of Stitches. March 2, 2010 by Penelope. Sorry for the time delay in this report. We headed out of town post-Sunday to get a meal and then get on the overnight flight home. By the time I got to the house here in NJ, wondering if I was going to have to dig through 28″ of snow to get to the front door (thanks to Danielle and Jesse, I didn’t! I crashed on the couch. Covered in two kitties (Hoshi and Oreo) for hours to try to catch up on some sleep and get rid of my Hobbit feet.

Knit Nude

Friday, January 14, 2011. Now just because this blog has 'knit' in the name, don't think I don't love EVERYTHING involving yarn. Crochet was my first love, and though most things I make now are knitted, it will always have a place in my heart. This was the first scarf I made, and it was a magic transforming scarf! I'm never quite sure what to do with shawls, apart from being naked in them. Though I suppose that's be good enough? And a bikini top! That's all for now! Tuesday, December 14, 2010.

KnitNut Natters

Monday, March 05, 2012. When I was 13, I had a run-in with my Art teacher. The assignment was simple, draw some shapes ( circles, rectangles, triangles), overlap a few and then paint them in 3 primary colours. Let's just say I failed. In hindsight I remember my piece to be extremely hideous, didn't follow the lines, splotches and smudges everywhere. Being a silly rebellious teenager, the only thing I took away from that lesson was that I was hopeless in art and never really tried again. Lately I have bee...
