Casting Off: An authentic New England clambake
http://casting-off.blogspot.com/2006/10/authentic-new-england-clambake.html
Sunday, August 27, 2006. An authentic New England clambake. Chowing down on some clams. You can see corn, sausages, potatoes, butter, and a big ole basket o' clams. Karl takes the biggest bite of clams ever. The clams coming out of the bake. Steam pours from the rocks, and from the huge heaps of seaweed. You can see some on the left. Posted by Melissa Jenks. Casting Off: Break
http://casting-off.blogspot.com/2014/09/break.html
Friday, September 26, 2014. Weekday regatta at Mattapoisett Harbor. August is a good month to spend in Massachusetts. There are regattas. There is alleged sunshine, more than the rest of the year, at least. There are clam bakes and fresh oysters and fluke sushi and better lobster than in Maine, if you can get your fingers into any. Authentic New England clambake at the Marion VFW. He ate four quarts- and flashes me a four to prove it. A volunteer rakes the seaweed- still the same seaweed, the same rocks.
Casting Off: I'm on fire
http://casting-off.blogspot.com/2015/02/im-on-fire.html
Wednesday, February 04, 2015. Plymouth library- my new studio. Can that other world really be existing without me? You close your eyes and poof: everything is transformed around you. And yet nothing changes. Here I am, back at the Plymouth library, my writing desk when I can get to it in Massachusetts- different and yet the same from my studio in Vermont. Louder. When did libraries abandon their prohibition against noise? I listen to ambient drone. Posted by Melissa Jenks. Dance of the Makers. When I arr...
Casting Off: Don’t be afraid
http://casting-off.blogspot.com/2014/12/dont-be-afraid.html
Friday, December 19, 2014. Don’t be afraid. Were Keats’ final words. More light, more light—the dying words of Goethe. Fear not, was what the angel Gabriel said when he appeared to Mary, and the command most often repeated in the Bible. How many times do I have to hear it? And still I am afraid. Occasionally. As today, posting a Kickstarter. In my video ( watch. To hear me read you a story), I say: "I know, from personal experience, the ways in which writers are finding it harder than ever to make a livi...
Casting Off: Fire is burning me
http://casting-off.blogspot.com/2012/01/fire-is-burning-me.html
Wednesday, January 25, 2012. Fire is burning me. More winter landscapes. Bored yet? But I'm just a girl living in the woods. Heating with wood. Trying not to let the winter drive her crazy. It comes close, some nights. Some nights it's between me and the winter—we're doing battle. It's the agon. I'm drifting. Is it winter making me drift? I shore these things up against the cold: my daily walks with Shadow. Words. Music. Light and heat and fire. Posted by Melissa Jenks. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
Casting Off: Johnson, Vermont
http://casting-off.blogspot.com/2015/01/johnson-vermont.html
Thursday, January 08, 2015. My room at the Vermont Studio Center. It is my fourth day here. Every step here has felt a sloughing off of skin. On Sunday, as I moved in this direction, passing through Massachusetts and into the mountains of Vermont, I felt like I was moving back in time, or deeper inside myself. Already I find myself hungering after my work, the work that I’ve postponed for so long. I am typing these words in a studio named after William Matthews. Morning we got the word fuck. Spat at us,.
Casting Off: At the border
http://casting-off.blogspot.com/2012/03/at-border.html
Tuesday, March 27, 2012. Do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life, goes the saying. But what if you can't earn a living doing what you love? What if pursuing a dream means living consistently below the poverty level. As I have for the past eight years? More questions without answers. Sorry. That's the promise—you can tell the mountain to uproot itself with only the faith of a mustard seed. All that's lacking is my own faith. Posted by Melissa Jenks. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
Casting Off: I saw a black branch
http://casting-off.blogspot.com/2014/08/i-saw-black-branch.html
Friday, August 29, 2014. I saw a black branch. At rest, among books, like a good literary dog. Looking right at me. At rest, in love. It kills me; he waited. This despite how we tormented him over the years with our adventures, our absences. We abandoned him again and again, leaving him with family that loved him, maybe more than we could, but how could he understand the inexplicable? Molting, as summer came on. In better days, hiking- I'm so happy now we took him with us on the Pinhoti Trail. I feel lik...

Kulturhistorier | Følg med på rejsen
Om “Kulturhistorier”. June 15, 2011 · 4:24 pm.
