Democracy in a Digitised World. Sideshows and carnival barkers. If I could choose just two things posted on this blog so far that would be guaranteed to be viewed by its visitors (which seem to be arriving in moderate quantities each day), it would be the previously-posted documentary entitled Us Now, as well as a video put out by the Wheeler Centre in Melbourne. The video is of a discussion held on the 15th of April called ‘The Talking Point: Is Australian Democracy Broken? The video can be watched here.

Democracy in a Digitised World. How to stop worrying and learn to love the internet. The video (well worth spending 6 minutes on):. I’ve made mention of the semantic web, or Web 3.0. Considering everyone only just get their heads around Web 2.0 (and because I’ll probably make at least passing reference to the semantic web in a report), I thought a couple of videos explaining the concept would be a good idea. An introduction to the semantic web:. Evolution Web 1.0, Web 2.0 to Web 3.0. This entry was poste...

Democracy in a Digitised World. As mentioned in the previous post, after much searching, I’ve found the platform I’ll be using to present my final report. That platform is Weebly. Put simply, Weebly is a service that provides not only hosting for websites, but also an intuitive system for developing websites themselves. There is a basic free version, which I am utilising, as well as a premium version with additional features. OECD Better Life Index. It’s funny, I remember being at an event recently...

Democracy in a Digitised World. As our case is new, so we must think anew, and act anew. Good news, everyone! What I will do is link to a few useful tools I found in the search for the aforementioned platform. While they weren’t entirely suitable for what I’m aiming for with my final report, they’ll certainly be useful in the future for other projects. It’s a fairly impressive tool. It has the benefit of being completely web-based, so not only can you free yourself from having to use PowerPoint...Prezi i...

Empowerment and Engagement - eDemocracy
http://edemocracy.weebly.com/empowerment-and-engagement.html
Empowerment, as Archon Fung explains, is the “expectation that citizens’ participation and deliberation will directly affect public action.” ([1], pp. 118-19) Citizen empowerment is inherently associated with – albeit in varying degrees dependent upon the depth of engagement – a disturbance of the existing power structure and methods of decision-making and agenda-setting. Authority is decentralised. Of individual and community knowledge to better design, target and deliver services that are truly localis...
Role of Government - eDemocracy
http://edemocracy.weebly.com/role-of-government.html
The Role of Government. EDemocracy is currently limited in scope and success due to the way in which it has been approached by government. The trends amongst elected representatives and public sector officials have been of indifference, and occasionally hostility, towards the principles and practical applications of eDemocracy. Aversion to incorporating eDemocracy initiatives, even those derived from models of lower interaction, is just as rampant – if not more so. A wide range of factors:. Of the Obama ...

Beyond the Vote: Renewing Democracy. A common trend exists amongst many Western democracies. This trend is multifaceted in nature and is associated with the core aspect of a society – that is, in what manner the people are governed. Citizens have become increasingly disillusioned with political systems. Between their views and those of their elected representatives. It can also be linked with more liberal-individualist or pluralist approaches. The definition of eDemocracy has also been muddled by haphazard discussion of the related but distinct term of ‘eGovernment’. eDemocracy and eGovernment are not synonymous. In fact, it would be more appropriate to consider eGovernment as part of eDemocracy, which is a much more broad and encompassing collection of ideas. eGovernment, as Chadwick and May explicate. Exploiting the Characteristics of the Internet. The traditional methods of political engagement have lost much of their appeal. Of broadcasting and mass-replicating data and information, opening the possibility for citizens to bypass traditional intermediaries to content, or even create their own content. The prime examples of this development have been the rise of blogs and social media:. Of prejudice, social cues, timorousness, disability, and financial disadvantage. Role of Government: External. The culture, policies and practices of government and the public service are heavily influenced by three key features. Indeed, the rationale behind many eGovernment initiatives has been the endeavour to offer ‘customer-oriented’ service delivery. General Policy and Approach. Providing information in a top-down and rigid manner. Rather, it is a new approach to governance.
