Rebbetzin Chana Heller에 따르면 자존감이란 추상적인 개념이기 때문에 실질적인 부분에 촛점을 맞출 필요가 있다고 한다. 즉 정말로 좋은 행동을 하고 있지 않는 한 진정한 의미의 자신감을 얻기 힘들다는 것이다. 자기파괴적인 행동을 일삼는, 스스로에게 해가되는 결정을 지속적으로 하는 사람에게 아무리 너는 훌륭한 사람이라고 말한들 통하지 않을 것이다. 이 사람은 자신의 이미지를 향상시킬 좋은 결정을 하기 전까지 자존감을 경험하기 힘들다. 따라서 이 사람에겐 자존감을 쌓을 수 있도록 환경을 조성해 줄 필요가 있다. 생각의 변화가 발전의 시작이라면 얼마나 많은 생각과 행동의 변화를 이루었는가 가 개발 원조 프로그램의 효과성을 측정하는 하나의 중요한 지표가 되어야 할 것이다. 저축그룹이 그 평가에서 단연 우위를 차지할 것을 의심치 않는다. 행동이 모든 차이를 만들어 낸다. 하느님은 기적을 싫어 하신다고 한다. 그러나 우리의 기도에는 귀기울이신다. 그렇다면 기적이 일어날 수 있는 자료를 듬뿍 제공해야 한다. 그것이 바로 행동이다. 내가 만일 부끄럽다고 또 귀찮다고 도움을 요청하지 않고 기회를 흘려 보냈다면 장학금은 결코 받지 못했을 것이다. 행동이 얼마나 중요한지 새삼 절감한다. 하느님이 우리의 기도를 들어 주도록 가능한 한 많은 씨앗을 뿌려야 한다. 행동이, 실천이 왜 그토록 중요한 이유이다. 선택과 집중, 그리고 버리기. 9월이면 다가오는 유대인 명절 로시 하사나 (Rosh Hashana)를 맞아 계획을 다시 세워 보았다. 세가지 목표를 정하고 어떤 노력으로 그 목표를 이룰 것인가에 대한 세가지 방법을 정하려고 하는데 가지수가 너무 많았다. 매년 계획을 세워도 너무 많은 것을 기대하는 바람에 계획이 나중에 항상 일주일도 안 되 수포로 돌아가는 경우가 얼마나 많았던가. 올해에는 그런 일이 일어나지 않도록 하기 위해선 어떤 전략을 구사해야 할까. 사람들은 중요한 일에 집중하라고 이야기 하나 그것을 위해 덜 중요한 일들을 포기하라는 말을 하지 못한다. 내가 좋아하는 피아니스트 안델셉스키는 피아노 음악 외에 듣는 음악이 거의 없다고 한다. 사실 엄청나게 바꾼 그의 일정을 소화하려면 피아노 이외의 시간을 잘라낼 필요가 있다. 흥미있는 그러나 장기적인 이익을 약속하지 않는 부분을 포기하는 것은 많은 용기가 필요한 일이다.
