In these wanderings I have occasionally come across a genuinely useful new technique and such is the new(-ish) row number and rank commands introduced by Microsoft in 2005. At last we can determine the position of a row and return that number as part of the dataset. Not only that but the order and grouping of the rows for the purposes of the ranking can be different from the dataset. Select client id, month, sum(value) from cashbook group by client-id, month.

Part of this quest has been the creation of a generic collection class that can contain our standard base class and all its derivations without recourse to the dynamic data type.
