On a happier note, we spent the one sunny day this week sitting in the meadow drinking tea with visiting friends Carolyn and Brian, enjoying the birds and butterflies. And not so much enjoying the mosquitoes, which the heavy rains this Spring have brought out in force. But on the other hand, the rain seems also seems to have brought back the tree frogs. Monday, April 13, 2015. Two weeks ago the snow was quite deep over the whole property, but today it was all gone, except for a little bit remaining in the shadiest places. Saturday, April 19, 2014. Out from under the snow. Or lounging in the sun this year. Our first walk in without snowshoes. It was finally warm enough to leave our toques and heavy winter coats at home, and sunny enough to be pleasant. The walk in left Ian exhausted, so he fell asleep on the bed for an hour while I did some maintenance and checked for winter damage. Later I made a fire and we enjoyed a cup of tea in sun. There are numerous signs that life continued under the snow all through the winter....

Monday, September 2, 2013. Different species of dragonflies visit our meadow throughout the summer. Their residency overlaps, but the last are always these small, red Saffron-winged Meadowhawks ( Sympetrum costiferum. So, I made this soap a couple weeks ago. but ended up hating what the fragrance morphed into and how the swirls turned out. so, I thought it was not going to be worthy of a post. That is until I actually used it! I'm in love with this recipe! So, we'll start off with the recipe- it's called a bastile because it's mainly olive oil but has other oils introduced so it can't be called a castile soap (which is 100% olive oil). We always buy 2-3 extras when they go on sale for Thanksgiving so I can have my fix. This time I tried a Cuban inspired seasoning mix and WOW is all I can say. This has orange and lemon and lots of garlic. I strayed from the original recipe as per usual so I will only give mine. 1 cup of orange juice. 1 cup of lemon juice. 4 tablespoons chopped garlic.
