Where I write about the many things that interest me. Friday, August 13, 2010. Dog' days of Summer. I never have been fond of summer. too hot to do much of anything. Can't take the dogs anywhere because of the heat. Of course I work out in the heat, so it seems to me like the summer lasts forever! One of the things I have been doing, because I can sit in front of the fan and do it, is crochet! So, here are a few of the latest projects. many will be posted on my Etsy store as soon as I can.

Conversations with Ginger: On Black History Month
http://craftyk9-gingerc.blogspot.com/2011/02/on-black-history-month.html
Where I write about the many things that interest me. Saturday, February 5, 2011. On Black History Month. I have never been fond of hyphenated Americans, of any kind. If you are a citizen of this country, born or naturalized, you are AMERICAN, period. That said, it is February, and hence it is again Black History Month. Another designation I have never been happy with. Why not American History month? In fact, let’s go back to the beginning of the country. I do not have enough space here to cover the enti...

Lyloak's Reflections on the German Shepherd Dog. Tuesday, March 1, 2011. Brackett's Principle #8: Use Only Outstanding Studs! 1937 and 1938 Grand VictorCh. Pfeffer v Bern. 8220;We should also select a stud who is preferably inbred, or at least quite strongly linebred, so that the strength such breeding gives to his prepotency will most likely insure his dominance in the mating pair.” [i]. Therefore, using an inbred or strongly linebred stud dog should insure some degree of prepotency. 8220;…in sele...

Lyloak's Reflections on the German Shepherd Dog. Wednesday, January 26, 2011. Brackett Principle #5: Outcross- But Only for Definite Purposes! Ch Drum of Long Worth. 8220;I will state unequivocally that ‘nobody but nobody’ amongst them is going to do constructive animal breeding or produce a satisfactory percentage of top specimens, and most certainly they WILL NOT build a strain within the breed. To demonstrate why they are not getting the desired results.” [i]. Brackett rests this premise on the author...

Lyloak's Reflections on the German Shepherd Dog. Monday, April 4, 2011. Brackett's Principle #10: Breed Back to Your "Toppers"! 1950 Grand VictrixCh Yola of Longworth. 8220;I try to point out a procedure by which a beginner breeder might, most quickly and surely, improve the ‘mean’ or average quality of his production—and indeed within a few years bring forth, and quite consistently, some ‘toppers.’” [i]. Brackett utilized the terminology of “toppers.”. Of course, “Mr. German Shepherd” ad...He stated tha...

Lyloak's Reflections on the German Shepherd Dog. Saturday, December 11, 2010. Brackett Principle #2: Build a Strain! 1937 and 1938 GV Ch. Pfeffer v Bern. Brackett readily admits to learning by his own mistakes. He, too, had previously practiced what he estimated that 98% of the average dog fanciers had done—mated the best bitches to the best available males, regardless of bloodlines. The strategy in which Brackett would implement to improve his breeding program would center upon building a distinct strain.

Lyloak's Reflections on the German Shepherd Dog. Monday, March 21, 2011. Brackett's Principle #9: Always Select the Best Bitch Puppies! Ch Orpha of Edgetowne. 8220;As soon as the litter is sufficiently grown so enough can be told about them to make a fairly safe selection (and this varies amongst different breeds), we try to pick the best bitch puppy. Let us presume that we find one resembling her sire more than the dam, as we have planned and hoped for.” [i]. They take up space, time and resources.
