Life These Days

Monday, July 03, 2017. A Sermon on Genesis 22:1-14, preached in June 2011. A Sermon on Genesis 22:1-14. What was I thinking? When I decided that this was the text on which I should focus our thinking this morning, what was I thinking? Because this is hard stuff. I don’t preach often, but I do preach often enough to have a sort of rhythm to my sermon-writing—a way of listening, reading, studying, and writing that eventually leads to this thing we call a sermon. But this text was different. First, I tried ...

Life These Days: October 2010

http://hospitalityhouse.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html

Thursday, October 28, 2010. Musings on a Calling. So this is what I worked for over the span of four years during my graduate studies at Columbia Theological Seminary? This is why I slaved and fretted over ordination exams and MCA’s and CPM paperwork? This is why I juggle two jobs, three sons, and an exponential number of schedules from mid-August to mid-May? To dress up as a witch and go Trick-or-Treating at age 44? You bet it’s what I worked for. It’s why I sat not once (for polity and ...Thank you God...

Sunday, April 22, 2012. A Not So Hospitable House. Just a few days ago, the administration of Columbia Theological Seminary,. The Tolbert in 2005: Michael, Joel, Adam, Jill, and Daniel. On Friday, Seminary President Steve Hayner addressed this decision in a letter. April 22, 2012. It is with both respect and deep sadness that I write this letter. I continue to stand in solidarity with many of my colleagues and brothers and sisters in the faith who have a deep love for the Triune God whom we worship a...

Life These Days: The Estuary

http://hospitalityhouse.blogspot.com/2012/06/estuary.html

Saturday, June 02, 2012. Today has been the first full day on our family's trip to Costa Rica. This is our second trip here as a family, having been fortunate enough to visit here in February of 2009 as well. However, it's my third time to be here- my first was in the summer of 1978. Each time. Been to the same place, and while not much has changed in the past 2 ½ years, it is very different than it was when I was here at the age of twelve. I don’t want them to worry after the fact, y’know? Later this af...

Life These Days: Something Larger

http://hospitalityhouse.blogspot.com/2012/06/something-larger.html

Tuesday, June 05, 2012. For the friends who have recently lost children to a darker world, I visualized peace, surrender, and acceptance. For the ones who have lost mothers or fathers in the past few months, I imagined comfort, strength, and smiles. For those traveling far and wide, I hoped for learning, growth, and reconciliation. And for the one for whom life itself too often resembles the harshness of the time-worn surface of the rocks on which I stood, my only prayer was for real, tangible hope.

Sermons and other ideas from the pastor of Southminster Presbyterian Church in Boise, Idaho. Sunday, April 26, 2009. Books and their Covers. A Sermon preached at Southminster Presbyterian Church. April 27, 2009. We do it all the time. When we’re judging THINGS because of their packaging, that is one thing. We’re usually the ones to suffer for bad judgment—occasionally a great book cover doesn’t mean a great story on the pages. Whether or not you’ve seen it already, I invite you to pay particular at...

I may have told you this before, but I am a fan of irreverent Christmas Cards. Like this one, with Jesus singing “Happy Birthday to Me”. But they didn’t have a room. And then the angels announce the birth of the Savior. But they don’t post it on Twitter or CNN.com. Katie Couric doesn’t get the scoop on the ...But these shepherds a...

SouthMinister's Musings: Christ the King

Sermons and other ideas from the pastor of Southminster Presbyterian Church in Boise, Idaho. Monday, November 23, 2009. A Sermon preached at Southminster. November 22, 2009. Psalm 18:1-6, 16-19, 46-50. But this language can be uncomfortable for those of us who don’t give power to earthly kings. What does it mean for us to declare Christ as King? And to more than declare it—what does it mean for us to live as if that is true? If ideology was behind his horrible actions, then I would argue he should have j...

http://remlerville.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html

Remlerville: What's Happening in the Remler Family. Sunday, February 17, 2013. This past weekend, the St. Peter the Apostle 8th grade basketball teams, both boys and girls, traveled to the great state of North Carolina to compete in the Shamrock Basketball Tournament. All weekend, I couldn't help thinking of the beloved 1980's basketball movie, Hoosiers. No, our team did not have gold satin practice uniforms. But thanks to Margaret and Ed Chapman at Bahama Joes,. They did have some really cool cinch sacks.

Remlerville: What's Happening in the Remler Family. Friday, March 21, 2014. BC versus Harvey (Otherwise Known as Sticks and Gnats). So, is this one of your hotter days? That was a third-quarter question asked near the goal as one of Harvey School's players conversed with a BC Cadet. We parents couldn't help chuckling. On its spring break, Harvey School of Ketonah New York. I've been in New York when it's hotter. I happened to get a shot of the conversation. Here's Lawson going after Harvey's #11. And the...

Sermons and other ideas from the pastor of Southminster Presbyterian Church in Boise, Idaho. Tuesday, September 29, 2009. A Sermon preached at Southminster Presbyterian Church. Where is God in victory and defeat? That’s the question I see in this text and I’ve noticed again and again as we’ve read the Old Testament. Is God with us when we succeed? Is God angry with us when we fail? And is God angry with us when we fail? Most Christians don’t blame entire subgroups of humanity for natural disasters&...

Sermons and other ideas from the pastor of Southminster Presbyterian Church in Boise, Idaho. Thursday, December 17, 2009. December 13, 2009 "Brood of Vipers". A Sermon preached at Southminster, Dec. 13, 2009. Before we can get to the sweet baby born in a manger, we have to deal with John. People are coming from all over to be baptized by John at the Jordan River. Every church dreams of people coming from all over the county to be baptized, right? And what would we say to those who came to join us? I imag...

This past Wednesday was the day the church celebrates the Ascension, which is the 40th day after Easter, when the church commemorates the Ascension of Christ into Heaven. Since we weren’t together on Wednesday, we are looking at the Ascension texts today. In any case, let’s look at Luke’s account first. That is how I would underst...

I wonder if any of you have ophidiophobia? If so, you join 36 percent of Americans who claim that the number one thing of which they are afraid is…. But snakes are also used as signs of healing such as in the caduceus, which is often used by medical practitioners to signify healing. Yet, we live our lives as if we trust ...
