New Stuff

http://www.homebrewcpu.com/new_stuff.htm

Though the hardware for the project is complete, there's a lot of software left to do. And, I suppose I'll likely tweak the hardware a bit from time to time as well. I'll update things on this page. We're approaching the 10-year anniversary of Magic-1 coming alive, which has prompted me to tune it up a bit. I replaced the 9-year-old power supply (which was failing) and reworked the mounting for the SD card drives. You can see pictures and details on my G stream. Anyway, here's Magic-1's clock timing:.

Magic-2?

http://www.homebrewcpu.com/magic-16.htm

An encore for Magic-1? Shortly after I declared Magic-1 hardware complete, I casually mentioned to my wife that I was starting to think about Magic-2. Her response was swift, and final:. No, there will be no Magic-2! She's the love of my life, the woman I plan on growing old with, mother of my children, my partner and best friend. I have to respect her wishes on this. So, there will be no Magic-2. Instead, we'll call the follow-on project Magic-16. Much of the reason I wanted to do Magic-1 was to learn m...

Construction

http://www.homebrewcpu.com/construction.htm

I read them all, and when I next had lunch with Ken at Vito's I reported back that it all seemed much clearer now - so much so that I thought I could even build a CPU myself. Then Ken said, well, why don't you? Why not, indeed? And so the Magic-1 project began. Backplane and card cage. Front Panel Logic card. Temporary front panel switch/LED assembly. Enclosure and front panel assembly. 12-6-2001: I begin a running development diary, and start off with an embarrassingly optimistic schedule. 1-18-2002: Bi...

Minix Port

http://www.homebrewcpu.com/minix_port.htm

Other than that, there's just been a lot of performance tuning, and the addition of some new applications (such as an IRC client, Tom Pittman's Tiny Basic, the Small C Compiler, and probably some others I've forgotten about). I also reworked the directory structure a bit - in particular putting the games at /usr/local/bin/games. Second, I moved the www root into a ram disk. I also ran cross a nice version of yahtzee and ported it. Try yahtzee. Anyway, lots to do at work and around the house, so I'm not s...

Technical Info

http://www.homebrewcpu.com/technical_info.htm

Documentation - It's a good thing. The documentation for Magic-1, unfortunately, is scattered about the website a bit more than would be ideal. However, we'll try to organize it a bit under this page. I wasn't entirely faithful in keeping a distinction between an architecture and an implementation. The following web page is an attempt to describe a Magic architecture, of which Magic-1 is a particular implementation. Development Diaries and Miscellaneous Documentation.

Homemade CPU – from scratch : Svarichevsky Mikhail

http://3.14.by/en/read/homemade-cpus

Homemade CPU from scratch. Since 1975 when one need a processor the only option is to buy one. In the most complex case one might consider going for configurable FPGA processor (like Nios II) with few extra commands, and that's it. Nowadays it is hard to believe that these fancy processors might be obtained some other way than just buying one. It's just like thinking that beef and bread is only made in the local shop. Why one would need to return to "root" technology? BMOW Big Mess of Wires. Made of low-...

Building an 8-Bit Computer – Now With Instructions. April 26, 2012. Middot; 13 Comments. I just finished wiring up the NVRAM chips to the computer. They are being addressed by a 8-bit program counter separate from the computer’s control counter. The control matrix changes its control word on the falling edge of the clock pulse. This allows the control to set up the 16-bit word, needed to tell which registers or operations are to be active, for the rising clock pulse. And Let the Testing Begin. I just put...
